Newport detective Wilbert Simpson managed golf course, swim club
Wilbert Simpson, a veteran police detective in Newport, stayed active long after his retirement from the force 20 years ago.
"He liked swimming and golfing. Those were his two main things," said Mr. Simpson's wife of 59 years, Vera Utendorfer Simpson.
However, Mr. Simpson also was an excellent husband and family man, his wife said.
"He had to be, for our marriage to last 59 years," she said.
Mr. Simpson, 82, of Ft. Thomas, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights.
He was a retired police detective with the Newport Police Department, and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Ft. Thomas.
Mr. Simpson served about 20 years on the police department.
"I think working with people was his favorite part of the job," Mrs. Simpson said.
Mr. Simpson had a good sense of humor, his wife said.
"He liked to speak up and have a good time. He wasn't on the quiet side," Mrs. Simpson said.
Mr. Simpson was a member of Southgate, Bellevue and Churchill senior groups, the Coca Cola Alumni Club, the Newport Fraternal Order of Police, and the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
He managed A. J. Jolly Park Golf Course and the Veterans Memorial Park Swim Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Thomas Simpson, died in 1964.
Other survivors include a daughter, Janet Fischer of Ft. Thomas; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 1 Churchill Drive, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Florence Hale Adams, 75, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James B. Adams, died in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Gary Adams of Ft. Thomas; a daughter, Gail Hatton of Newark, Del.; a sister, Mary Bratton of Stamping Ground; a brother, John Hale of Ocala, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Florence Baptist Church, 283 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042.
Donald W. Clawson, 82, of Alexandria, died Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital, Tampa, Fla. He was a retired machinist with Gidding and Lewis, Covington, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Genevieve Clawson, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Donna Clawson of Cold Spring and Barbara Monterosso of Alexandria; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Eva M. Connett Ebert, 81, of Newport, died at 5:10 p.m. Sunday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker, a past president of Corpus Christi Altar Society and a member of St. Ann Auxiliary Knights of St. John. Her husband, Stanley H. Ebert, died in 1981.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Brewer of Wilder, Margie Plummer of Dayton and Patricia Spradlin of Cincinnati; a brother, Charles Connett of Newport; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Ethel Haggard, 69, of Lake Wales, Fla., formerly of Morning View, died Monday in Florida.

Logan Tyler Humphrey, the son of Chester Humphrey and Crystal Booth, both of Latonia, was stillborn at 11 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.
Other survivors include a half-brother, Chet Humphrey of Latonia; half-sister, Danielle Humphrey of Latonia; and grandparents, John and Donna Booth, and Chester and Bonnie Humphrey, all of Latonia.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Ft. Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
August Huss, 77, of Erlanger, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired industrial paper buyer with Diem and Wing, Cincinnati; a member of Florence Baptist Church, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Huss; a son, John Huss of Ft. Wright; a daughter, Andrea Stringer of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Lorenz of Newport; a brother, Arthur Huss of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.
Services were this morning at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Lewis F. Jones, 48, of Newport, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a truck driver with Queen City Barrel, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Smith of Newport; daughters, Crystle Jones and Kimberly Jones, both of Michigan; a brother, Ronnie Jones of Cincinnati; and his fiancee, Kimberly Smith of Newport.

Edward F. Kelly, 78, of Latonia, died at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a former director of the Campbell County Adult Work Activity Center and an instructor with the Blessed Sacrament Special Religious Education program. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Ft. Mitchell, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Kelly; a son, Michael Kelly of Covington; brothers, James R. Kelly of Warren, N.J., and John J. Kelly of Princeton, N.J.; a sister, Claire McDevitt of Freehold, N.J.; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

David Enoch Lemox, the son of Rodney and Jennifer Lemox of Covington, was stillborn Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Katherine Louise Lewis, 87, of Augusta, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Augusta, and the church Women's Society.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Turner and Elizabeth Smith, both of Augusta; four grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.

Oletta Mason Powell, 81, of Owenton, died Saturday at Owenton Manor nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church. Her husband, Robert B. Powell, died in 1986.
Survivors include sons, Bobby Powell of Frankfort and Gerald Powell of Owenton; a daughter, Shirley Walker of Owenton; a brother, William Mason of Owenton; sisters, Beulah O'Nan of Frankfort, Lucy O'Banion, Nellie Clifton and Marguerite Lusby, all of Owenton; five grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

Ruby Rash, 58, of Carrollton, died Friday at Green Valley Health Care Center in Carrollton. Survivors include a friend, Hazel Brooks of Sanders, who took care of Ms. Rash.

Ida L. Romans, 92, of Williamstown, died Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Williamstown Baptist Church. Her husband, Thomas Lee Romans, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Lauretta Miller of Williamstown; a sister, Bertha Ruth Johnson of Mason, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Robert R. Westermeyer, 67, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired insurance appraiser with Metro Adjusting Service, Covington.
