Loraine Marshall Riley, Kenton teacher
Loraine Marshall Riley began her career teaching all grades in a one-room school house in Kenton County.
She ended up retiring in 1970 with 28 years of service in the district after spending most of her time in Taylor Mill and Visalia schools.
Her daughter, Wavilyn Parsons of Independence, attended Mrs. Riley's sixth-grade class and didn't receive any special treatment.
"She was kind, compassionate and understanding," Mrs. Parsons said of her mother.
Mrs. Riley, 92, of Independence, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Ft. Wright.
She loved gardening and flowers and was a member of Kenton County Homemakers, Taylor Mill Senior Citizens and the Kenton County Retired Teachers Association. Her husband, Leslie Riley, died in 1965.
Mrs. Riley grew up in Kenton County and earned her college degree from what is now
Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
She prided herself on running a good home and often prepared meals for her husband, a farmer, and people who helped him, her daughter said.
She attributed her mother's longevity to hard work, a good diet and staying away from smoking and other bad habits.
"The Lord wanted to keep her here those many years," Mrs. Parsons said.
Other survivors include sons, Wayne Riley of Independence and Wynford M. Riley of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Evelyn Baker, 54, of Bellevue, died at 6:08 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, George Baker; a daughter, Lisa Parker of Woodlawn; a son, Gary Baker of Dayton; her mother, Della Wiseman Campbell of Bellevue; a sister, Lucille Russell of Dayton; brothers, Paul Campbell of Highland Heights, Elmer Campbell and Thomas Campbell, both of Alexandria; and two grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
James Ferrell Hatfield, 82, of Ft. Thomas, died at 11:05 a.m. Monday at his home.
He was a catering manager with Manor Catering, Cincinnati, a 32nd-degree Mason, a member of the Covington Scottish Rite, and an Army veteran of World War II.
His wife, Ellen Gabbard Hatfield, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Hatfield Hudepohl of Ft. Thomas; sisters, Ruby Elizabeth Taylor of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Bobbie Katherine May of Cincinnati; brothers, Francis Marion Hatfield of Cincinnati, Chip Channon Hatfield of Taylor Mill, Millard Gordon Hatfield of Johnson City, Tenn., and Clifton Eugene Hatfield of Spring Hill, Fla.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Ben Julick Jr., 59, of Sparta, died Monday at his home after an extended illness.
He was a self-employed auto-body repairman.
Survivors include sons, Jim Julick of Newport and Raymond Julick of LaGrange; a stepson, Robert Williamson of Williamstown; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw.
Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday.
Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Mary K. Lewis, 69, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Robert Anderson "Andy" Simpson, 78, of Williamstown, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the VA Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Thomas D. Vaughan, 55, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was a retired truck driver with McKesson and Robbins Drug Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Vaughan; a brother, James Vaughan of Erlanger; a half-brother, Michael Broughton of Edgewood; and a sister, Beverly Wolfe of Owenton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Robert R. Westermeyer, 67, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical CenterSouth, Edgewood.
He was a retired insurance appraiser with Metro Adjusting Service, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Westermeyer; daughters, Michele Westermeyer and Vickie Henson, both of Covington; sons, Jeff Westermeyer of Boston, David Westermeyer of Okinawa, Japan, Bobby Westermeyer of San Antonio, Chase Westermeyer of Florence, Mike Franks of Cumberland and James Franks of Florence; brothers, Joseph Westermeyer and Bill Westermeyer, both of Florence, Carl Westermeyer of San Diego and Tony Westermeyer of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and sisters, Carolyn Oberschlake of Harrison, Ohio, Gretchen Orlando of Cincinnati, Marge Cook of Erlanger and Helen Iverson of Jamestown, Ind.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass was this morning at St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

John Joseph Winstel, 86, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ft. Thomas, died at 8 p.m. Monday at Franciscan Hospital-Western Hills, Cincinnati.
He was a retired accountant with General
Electric, Cincinnati, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
His wife, Eleanor Huhn Winstel, preceded him in death.
Survivors include brothers, Joseph R. Winstel of Cincinnati and Frank J. Winstel of Columbus, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday.
