Daniel J. Pompilio, last founder of Newport restaurant
Daniel Joseph Pompilio, the last of the founders of Pompilio's Italian restaurant in Newport, died at 1:47 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 80.
Mr. Pompilio was a teen-ager when his parents opened Pompilio's with their three sons in 1933.
"My grandmother did most of the cooking. The three boys did the management and the bar. My grandfather was the boss," said Mr. Pompilio's son, Daniel, who is a Ft. Thomas police officer.
A community landmark, Pompilio's gained national fame when used as a location for the Oscar-winning film "Rainman."
The Pompilios ran the restaurant until 1982, when the three sons retired and sold it.
"They would work 12 and 14 hours a day, seven days a week," the younger Pompilio said.
He said his father's only break from the business was when he attended the University of Kentucky in 1941 and enrolled in ROTC. When World War II broke out, he enlisted and served through 1944, when he returned to Pompilio's.
"He was always able to work with people. Years after they sold the restaurant, employees would keep in touch with him, stopping to visit," Daniel Pompilio said. "You weren't just an employee, you were part of the family."
"People tell us he did things for them that we never knew about. He never said anything," the younger Pompilio said. "One couple lost their home in a fire. He gave them a down payment on a house. They worked at the restaurant."
The elder Daniel Pompilio and his wife, Myrtle, had been childhood sweethearts, their son said. They maintained lifelong friendships with a group of high school classmates.
After they retired, the friends formed a club. "Two or three times a month they would go bowling, go out to dinner. They went on vacations together," Daniel Pompilio said. "My father was a very active and fun-loving person. He taught me and everyone around him to treat everyone else the way you would want them to treat you."
Mr. Pompilio and his wife lived in Newport until 1969, when they moved to Ft. Thomas. Two years ago they moved to a condo in Wilder. They would go to Florida every year for Cincinnati Reds' spring training, and return for Opening Day.
He was a member of the Ft. Thomas Retired Mens Club and the 55 Club at St. Thomas Church in Ft. Thomas.
His recent illness had been sudden; he died of heart failure, his son said.
In addition to his wife and son, survivors include daughters, Sandra Crawford of Newport, Kathy Eggerding of Cincinnati and Karen Gassmann of Ft. Wright; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, followed by prayers. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.
Edith C. Abercrombie, 84, of Owenton, died Thursday at Owen County Hospital, Owenton. She was a cashier with Walgreens Drugs in Latonia and a member of Florence Christian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Blick of Perry Park; a brother, Glyn Blades of Foster; a sister, Nawanda Watts of Sterling Heights, Mich.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Florence Christian Center, 100 Christian Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Mary A. Bauscher, 88, of Ft. Mitchell, died Thursday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Pauline Smith Coomer, 87, of Warsaw, died Thursday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw, after an extended illness. She was a homemaker, and a member of Warsaw United Methodist church and Napoleon Homemakers. Her husband, Elbert Fred Coomer, died in 1972. Sons, Danny Paul Coomer and Silas Coomer, died in 1983 and 1985, respectively.
Survivors include daughters, Helen Walker of Warsaw, Doris Sipple and Sharon Orsburn, both of Dry Ridge; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Warsaw United Methodist Church, Warsaw, Ky. 41095.
Wilton B. Cupp, 69, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., formerly of Covington, died Thursday at Dearborn County Hospital, Lawrenceburg. He was a road crew worker with the Kentucky State Highway Department, a member of Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 in Covington, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include a brother, Jim Cupp of Walton; a sister, Anna DeMoss of Florence; and a half-brother, James Norman Howard of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitch ell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Louise Curtin, 81, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
Survivors include her husband, John Damico of Covington.

Dr. Fred Noble Hill, 73, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Bardstown, died March 26 at his home. He was a retired research chem ist with Union Carbide, Charles ton, W.Va.; a scoutmaster and an elder with John Calvin Presbyterian Church, Tulsa.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Wallingford Hill, formerly of Ft. Mitchell; a daughter, Carol Hill Michael of Tulsa; and sons, Col. Richard K. Hill of Beaver creek, Ohio, and Douglas B. Hill of Denton, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Hamory of Hershey, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Larry E. Mannix, 62, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was an entrepreneur.

Pamela Sue Middleton, 40, of Erlanger, died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington, of cancer. She was a criminal investigator and witness coordinator with the Internal Revenue Service, Covington, and a member of Beech grove Baptist Church, Independence.
Survivors include her hus band, James Middleton; daughters, Stacy Marie Middleton of Ludlow, Kimberly Sue Middle ton and Jamie Daniell Middle ton, both of Erlanger; a sister, Cheryl Lee of Ryland Heights; and one grandchild.

Hubbard Kavanaugh Moore, 73, of Taylor Mill, died at 12:55 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a regional field manager with Sambo Co. and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Moore; daughters, Don Etta Moore of Taylor Mill and Jill Denise Blahnik of Elkin, N.C.; sons, Hubbard Kavanaugh Moore Jr. of Louisville and Ronald Philip Blahnik of Elkin, N.C.; his mother, Elizabeth Perry Moore of Florence; sisters, Isabell Reisbeck of Florence and Janet Bratton of Lansing, Mich.; brothers, Louis Moore of Florence, Charles Moore of Ft. Wright, Kenneth Moore of Bur lington and Thomas Moore of Jacksonville, Fla. and three grandchildren.

Larry Lamont "Monty" Penick, 42, of Park Hills, died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday at his home. He was a postal carrier.
Survivors include a son, Carson L. Penick, at home; daughters, Emily M. Penick and Stacee J. Penick, both at home; his mother, Alberta E. Penick of Park Hills; a brother, William E. Penick of Florence; and a sister, Kathryn D. Hopkins of Springboro, Ohio.

Jean Ray, 69, of Aberdeen, Ohio, died Thursday at her home. She was an office manager with Emerson Power Transmissions, Maysville; the retired manager of Riverbend Apartments in Aberdeen, and a one time part owner of Browning's Trucking and Garage, Plumville.
Survivors include sons, Mike Browning of Erlanger, Tony Browning of Covington and Robert Wayne Browning of Cincinnati; a daughter, Lynda McKee of Flemingsburg; a brother, Donnie Morgan of Plumville; sisters, Geneva McClees and Pauline Arnold, both of Lansing, Mich.; and eight grandchildren.
