Falmouth's Alva Clayton, highway engineer, farmer

Alva "Al" Clayton was a gentleman farmer who also spent 27 years with the Kentucky Department of Highways.

Mr. Clayton, a native of Pendleton County, was an engineer who helped determine how much material would be used on the roads.

He often worked on his farm after putting in a full day for the state, said his wife of 57 years, Alta Clayton.

"He was a hard-working man and could do more work at his age than a lot of the young ones," Mrs. Clayton said. "He worked all over the state."

Mr. Clayton, 82, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

He was a member of Oakland Christian Church in Pendleton County and Hardin-Browning American Legion Post No. 109 in Falmouth.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Mr. Clayton was a quiet man who enjoyed fishing and gardening.

"He was a good man," Mrs. Clayton said.

Other survivors include a son, Gary Clayton of Lexington; three great-grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Memorials are suggested to Oakland Christian Church, Bachelors Rest Road, Falmouth, Ky. 41040; Hardin-Browning American Legion Post No. 109, Montjoy Street, Falmouth, Ky. 41040; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Martha Bryant, 88, of Warsaw, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Joseph M. Carroll, 60, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired railroad transportation specialist with the Rock Island and Central Vermont railroads, an Army veteran, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Mary Carroll; sons, Matthew Joseph Carroll, Kevin Joseph Carroll and Brian Joseph Carroll, all of Elsmere; daughters, Kelly Suzanne Gorrell of Burlington and Julie Kathleen Carroll of Springfield, Mass.; a sister, Kathleen Monaghan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and five grandchildren.

Memorial Mass will be at the convenience of the family. Mr. Carroll's body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested in the form of Masses, or to the American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Elizabeth "Elsie" B. Tretter Clingner, 88, of Covington, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rosie Reds.

Survivors include daughters, Sylvia Wilson of Covington and Phyllis Ann Rigney of Ludlow; a son, Francis "Chip" Clingner of Latonia; sisters, Almeda Sicko of Covington and Leona Hazen of Bloomington, Ind.; a brother, Richard Tretter of Lakeside Park; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Benedict Church, Covington. A reception will follow the Mass. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076; or Leukemia Society of America, 100 Merchant St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45246. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Rosalyn Bay Colvin, 75, of Bracken County, died Monday at Maysville Extended Care Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Church of Christ, Bracken County.

Survivors include her husband, Don Colvin; sons, Ted Colvin, Chad Ashley Colvin and Keith Brandon Colvin, all of Foster; daughters, Rhonda Stacy and Carly Jo Stacy, both of Richmond; sisters, Rena McCane of Brooksville and Irma Beuttel of Crestview; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials are suggested to Bethany Church of Christ, Highway 10, Foster, Ky. 41043; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

George Csordas, 61, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood, and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Freda Csordas; a son, George N. Csordas of Melbourne; a daughter, Diana Chapman of Auburn, Calif.; a brother, Nicholas Csordas of Hungary; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested in the form of Masses, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Norma Frommeyer, 75, of Bellevue, died at 3:17 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired switchboard operator with International Thomson Publishing Co., Boone County. Her husband, Carl Frommeyer, died in 1973.

Survivors include a nephew, Robert Speier of Southgate; a niece, Linda Schuchter of Ft. Thomas; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Therese School Building Fund, 2516 Alexandria Pike, Southgate, Ky. 41071.

Crit Golden, 75, of Foster, died Tuesday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Raymond L. Hudgins, 71, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital, LaGrange. He was a truck driver with Overnight Transportation Co., a member of Carrollton Christian Church, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Hudgins; and a sister, Martha Laswell of Shepardsville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Carrollton Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to Carrollton Christian Church, 310 5th St., Carrollton, Ky. 41008.

Mary C. Maida Mercer, 83, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired clerk with the Internal Revenue Service, Covington. Her husband, John David Mercer, died in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Mercer of Gresham, Ore.; and sisters, Margaret Sage of Fairfield, Ohio, and Jeanne James of Covington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Florence R. Wind Riesenberg, 77, of Cincinnati, formerly of Kenton County, died Monday at Hospice of Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Chic Young No. 102 Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Her husband, Bernard G. Riesenberg, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Larry Riesenberg, Fred Riesenberg, John Riesenberg and Gilbert Riesenberg, all of Cincinnati; daughters, Judy Moeller and Jan Gilbert, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Rita Held and Henrietta Schneider, both of Northern Kentucky; and nine grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Saviour Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Quentin K. Staley Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

William J. Rohe, of Villa Hills, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Geneva Smallwood, 75, of Latonia, died at 5:38 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Joyce Smith, 62, of Cincinnati, died at 1:50 a.m. today at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Carl Wilson, 83, of Hebron, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a machinist with Cincinnati Ventilating Co. His first wife, Arthenia Wilson, died in 1983. His second wife, Ruth Wilson, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Lester Wilson of Newport; stepdaughters, Norma Jean Miller of Cincinnati and Dorothy N. Mullins of Hebron; sisters, Gladys Peel of Nicholasville, Ruth Walker of Lexington and Audrey Wilson of Washington, D.C.; brothers, Frederick Wilson of Harrodsburg, Glenn Wilson of Wilmore, Russell Wilson of Tennessee and Virgil Wilson of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
