Annie Elsa Lovisa Karlsson
Annie Elsa Lovisa Karlsson was born in Gisslatorp Orrefors, Sweden on Feb. 10, 1908. She attended the local schools with continued study at the Husqvarna Sewing School and a special homemakers cooking school. With a group of 45 girls, she was confirmed in Madesjo Church in 1922. In October of 1962, she was fortunate to return for their 40th reunion and also arrange her daughter Shirley's marriage in her church. She was united in marriage to Joel Johnson Gillgard at Winnipeg, Canada, on Dec. 16, 1929. He had courted her in Sweden before she came. The couple changed their last name from Johnson to Gillgard in 1946 because the relatives in Sweden had done so. The Gillgard's farmed around the Cogswell-Gwinner, North Dakota vicinity and then resided in Gwinner for 16 years. They retired and moved to Fergus Falls in August of 1961. Sadly, Mr. Gillgard passed away on Oct. 12, 1961, at the age of 64. On a boat trip to Sweden in May of 1967, she met a Swedish-American widower named Hans Ekvall, who was her sambo (special friend) for 27 years until his death in June of 1994. They traveled a lot and especially enjoyed visiting their relatives in Sweden and picnics by the beautiful Swedish lakes. Her family will miss Elsie very much; daughter, Shirley Del Furia and grandson, John Del Furia of Gothenburg, Sweden; grandson, Richard Del Furia and his Danish sambo Lisbeth Petersen of Minneapolis; her son-in-law, Dr. George Del Furia passed away in 1999; her two grandsons came to visit their grandma many times. To her community, where she came as a young bride, she was true. She was active in the Sunshine Homemaker's Club, the Farmer's Union, the Gwinner Elevator, Band Mother's club, and the Gustav Adolf Lutheran Church where she served in the ladies aid many years. In Fergus Falls, she was a member of First Lutheran Church and found new friends in her Birthday Club. Her daughter Shirley visited her every year at the Broen Memorial Home; twice in 2000 and 2001. Family slides gave her entertainment last August with the large screen. What would we have done without Marge Johnson? Marge gave her great support; visited her often and read her mail to her. Her mail basket was always in sight and she knew what was in there. The Beckstrom, Swanson, and Erikson families from North Dakota brought her news. Her grandson, Richard and Lisbeth took her outside on her last Sunday. Her grandson, John wrote his grandma many postcards throughout the years and last visited her in 1990. She was preceded in death by her parents, Per and Anna Karlsson, her sister, Gunhild; and four brothers, Martin, Hugo, Fritiof, and Albert. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Ebba Karlsson and many nieces and nephews; also two of Joel's sisters, Nellie Karlsson and Siv Boberg, all in Sweden. First cousins in Pennsylvania gave her family contacts in the United States. All these Nordberg's will miss Elsie.
