Arthur Nicely, enjoyed working with his hands
Arthur W. Nicely made his living with his hands in a 40-year career at the Middletown, Ohio, works of Armco Steel Corp.
But he also made other things with his hands -- for fun.
"He was an excellent carpenter; he made cabinets and bookshelves, " said his son, Robert A. Nicely, of Edgewood.
Some of thos epieces he used in his own home; others he gave to family members.
Mr. Nicely, 85, of Edgewood, died Tuesday at his home.
His first full-time job was at Armco, and he liked the work well enough that he stayed at it until he retired in the early 1980s. He was a pattern maker for much of that time, then later became foreman at the foundry, the position from which he retired.
His father also liked to work around the house, Robert Nicely said.
"Whenever something needed fixing, the plumbing or something, he liked to do it himself, " his son said,
He also was "very dedicated" to his job at Armco, his son said. "He was a very hard-working person."
After he retired, Mr. Nicely and his wife, Ann M. Nicely, took car trips, including an extended one to the West Coast. She died in 1991.
Mr. Nicely was a 40-year member of Holy Family Parish in Middletown and a member of St. Pius Church in Edgewood.
Survivors, in addition to his son, include two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon today at Holy Family Parish- St. John's Church, Middletown. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. today at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, Middletown.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Louise Allphin, 82, of Florence, died Thursday at her residence.
She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Baptist Temple. Her husband, William "Jack" Allphin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Bill Sutton of Burlington; a brother, Jake Dean of Erlanger; and a sister, Pat Tackett of Walton; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Florence Baptist Temple, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona, and again at 1 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Jimmie Larry Burgess, 58, of Grant County, died Thursday at his home.
He was a retired automobile assembler for General Motors Corp., Norwood, Ohio, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Webster Burgess; daughters, Kimberly Rene Eldridge and Trena Michelle Riggs, both of Williamstown; sisters, Geraldine Marksberry of Dry Ridge, and Kathryn Evans of Williamstown; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Cheryl L. Hamilton Clarke, 56, of Cincinnati, died at 9:11 p.m. Thursday at Jewish Hospital.
She was a cashier at Kroger.
Survivors include a daughter, Tammy S. Hammond of Cincinnati, and two grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be said at noon Monday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Angel Marie Corley, infant daughter of Chris Corley and Angel Marie Byrne of Covington, died Wednesday at her home.
Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Alexa Corley, and a brother, Christopher Corley, both at home; grandparents, Connie Byrne of Crestview, Lisa Corley of Covington and David Byrne of Florence; and great grandparents Aleene Corley and Rex Corley, of Florida.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.
Charles Warman Garner, 74, of Independence, died at 8:23 a.m. Friday at his residence.
He was a retired salesman for Johnson Electric and a former stereotypist for the Kentucky Post and Enquirer. He was a 50-year member of the Latonia Lodge No. 746 F&AM; and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Courtney Garner; a son, Doug Garner of Independence; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 1p.m. Monday at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.
L.G. Hall, 76, of Butler, died Thursday at St. Luke East Hospital, Fort Thomas.
He was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, May Hall; a son, Mike Hall of Erlanger; a daughter, Karen Pape of Butler; a brother, Edwin Hall of Falmouth; one grandchild and a great grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Mary Ann Klein, 57, died Jan. 30 at her home in Union Township, Ohio. She was a graduate of Lasalette Academy in Covington and Thomas More College.
Surviving are her husband Samuel Klein; a daughter, Sarah Preston; brothers, Joseph Lyons, Michael Lyons of Covington and Chris Lyons of Latonia; and a step-granddaughter.
Services have already been held.

Millie Marie Lewis, 84, of Warsaw, died Friday at Kings Daughter Hospital, Madison, Ind.
She was a homemaker, a member of the United Methodist Church in Clay City, and a past Matron of Gent, 331 Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by sons, John Smith Lewis and Darrel Ray Lewis.
Survivors include her husband, Billie Lewis; brothers, Orville Pasley, Lenwell Pasley and George Pasley, all of Clay City; sisters, Margie Pasley, Lorelei Pasley and Wilma Pasley, all of Clay City; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Floyd Mason, 75, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke East Hospital, Fort Thomas.
He was a lithographer for Danaldson Art & Sign Co., Covington. He was a member of the Faith Assembly Church of God in Newport and a World War II Army and Navy veteran.
Survivors include daughters, Sharon Stephens, Lanette Mason and Renea Creekmore, all of Alabama, and Sheila Pabst of Melbourne; stepsons, Ralph Profitt of Brooksville, the Rev. Maynard Stamper of Covington, and Ronnie Thomas, Paul G. Thomas Jr., and Gary Thomas, all of Cincinnati.

Emily Jane Miller, 83, of Covington, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Miller; and sons, Bob Miller of Anaheim, Calif., and Roger Miller of Franklin, Ohio.

Mary Jean Milton, 76, of Erlanger, died Thursday at U.K. Medical Center, Lexington.
She was a self-employed hairdresser. Her husband, James Pogue Milton, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Wayne Milton of Carlisle and Gary Milton of Albany; a sister, Joan Phyllis Walker of Port Richie, Fla.

Edward N. Moneyhon, 68, of Lexington, formerly of Maysville died Sunday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.
He was a former employee of Montgomery Ward, Maysville, and the United States Postal Service. He also was a member of Germantown Baptist Church. He attended the Kentucky School for the Blind.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori Donegan of Hebron.
Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in May's Lick Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home, May's Lick.

Margaret Purnell, 65, of Warsaw, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice.

Floyd William Spegal, 67, of Newport, died Thursday.
He was a former mechanic for Bill Upton's Auto Repair & Salvage. His wife, Elizabeth Ann Spegal, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Mari Lisa Arrowood of Newport; sons, Timothy William Spegal of Newport and John Edward Spegal of Cincinnati; sisters, Florence Beagle of Florence, Fay Sexton of Glencoe, Rose Henn of Covington, Ruth Harmeling of Independence, Clemmy Spegal of Harlan, Linda Niece of Cincinnati and Nola Hamel of Newport; a brother, Ronald Lamire Spegal of Elizabeth; and seven grandchildren.

Floyd Stewart Jr., 71, of Owenton, died Thursday at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
He was a farmer and a member of the Owen County Sportsman Club and the VFW Post 3119. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include sons, Brian and Travis Stewart, both of Frankfort; a daughter, Tammy Stewart West of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; a sister, Irene Burford of Owenton; and three grandchildren.

Richard A. "Dick" Von Hoene, 63, of Price Hill, Ohio, died Wednesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Western Hills.
He was a television host and producer with Insight Communications in Covington, well known as the television character "Cool Ghoul, " and a member of the Actors Guild.
Survivors include daughters, Vickie Von Hoene of Blue Ash, Ohio, and Vanessa Jacquillard of Cincinnati; brothers, Frank Von Hoene of Cincinnati, and Thomas Von Hoene of Delhi Township, Ohio; sisters, Margaret "Sudie" Von Hoene of Cold Spring and Mary Ellen "Boots" Kenny of Blue Ash; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Frederick E. Williams, 86, of Cold Spring, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday at Highland Heights Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was a retired staff assistant and member of the Transportation & Communication Union in Maryland, and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Dixon Williams; sons, Joel Williams of Florence and Thomas Williams of Cold Spring; daughters, Dona Chase of Crescent City, Calif., and Diane Koch of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Charles Williams of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
There will be no services. Mr. Williams donated his body to the University of Cincinnati Anatomy Department.
