John B. Ryan, happy life had a rough start
A few days before his death on Friday, John B. Ryan told his son he had lived a very happy life and was ready to move on.
The Fort Wright resident began his 84 years in humble circumstances, said his son, John D. Ryan of Fort Mitchell.
Mr. Ryan's mother was an Irish immigrant, who worked as an 11-year-old in a glass factory in Mount Adams to help support her family.
She married
a Jack Ryan, but they divorced soon after Mr. Ryan was born. She remarried a man named Ray Tatman, who helped raise Mr. Ryan.
They lived in many places in Covington -- Dalton Avenue and West Covington among them. "I think they moved around as the rent was due, " said Mr. Ryan's son.
Mr. Ryan attended John G. Carlisle School, completed the seventh grade and then started working as a clerk for the C & O Railway when he was 16.
He married
his first wife, the former Gertrude Anness, in 1941.
As a railroad worker when World War II reached America, he was exempt from the draft. But he elected to join the Navy in 1943.
He piloted landing craft during amphibious operations, and made landings on Tarawa, Tinian, Saipan, Luzon and Iwo Jima. After he took Marines ashore, he would ferry ammunition and supplies to the beach.
After he contracted pneumonia on Iwo Jima, he was sent to Pearl Harbor and eventually discharged.
Reunited with his wife, he lived with her until her death from cancer in 1970. Two years later, he married
his wife's sister, the former Pauline Anness.
"My cousins are also my stepbrothers and (step)sisters, " his son said. "We all get along fine."
Mr. Ryan's second wife died in 2002, also from cancer.
