Bruce Brownfield Sr., band leader for 'Paul Dixon Show'
From the 1950s through the 1970s, Bruce O. Brownfield Sr. was one of the most recognizable figures in the Midwest.
"We would walk down the sidewalk and people would say, 'Oh, there's Bruce from the Paul Dixon Show, '" said his wife of 59 years, Millie Brownfield.
"It seemed like everybody knew him."
Mr. Brownfield was so well known because, from 1955 through 1972, he was the band leader and musical director on the popular "Paul Dixon Show, " which originated at the WLWT television studios in Cincinnati and was carried on several Midwest stations.
Mr. Brownfield, 82, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at Brighton Gardens Care Center in Edgewood.
He was a former public relations director for the Covington Independent Board of Education and a former member of the Northern Kentucky University faculty.
He also was a member of Col. Clay Lodge No. 159 F&AM;, Musicians Union Local No. 1 AFM, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
In addition to his stint on Dixon's show, Mr. Brownfield played piano and the accordion throughout Greater Cincinnati. He was a winner on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts television program playing the accordion.
"Bruce was an all-around good fellow, " said Mrs. Brownfield. "He had a good disposition and got along with everybody."
Other survivors include a daughter, Dinah Martin of Lakeside Park; sons, Bruce O. Brownfield Jr. of Symmes Township, Ohio, and Steve A. Brownfield of Crescent Springs; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Entombment will be in Highland Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Robert P. "Ace" Adams, 73, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and a Korean War veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn L. Niemeyer Adams; sons, Robert L. Adams, Patrick G. Adams, James T. Adams and Michael T. Adams, all of Cincinnati, and John P. Adams of Taylor Mill; daughters, Mary E. Adams, Rosemarie A. Goodrich and Pamela S. Strack, all of Cincinnati; a brother, George E. Adams of Cincinnati; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Church, Cincinnati.

Juanita Robinson Ashcraft, 77, of Verona, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Walton.
Her husband, Charles Gilbert Ashcraft, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Lynn Lonaker of Crittenden; sons, Garry D. Ashcraft and Daniel Lee Ashcraft, both of Verona, and Ronnie Ashcraft of Corinth; sisters, Geneva Speagle of Taylor Mill, Comellia Cook of Dry Ridge and Leona Biddle of Verona; a brother, Ray Robinson of Walton; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Mary Elston Baker, 89, of Louisville, formerly of Carroll County, died Monday at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville.
She was a retired director of pupil personnel with Carroll County Schools and a member of Ghent Baptist Church.
She was a member of Caby M. Froman Literary Society, Carrollton Women's Club, Polly Hawkins Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Carroll County Retired Teachers Association.
Her husband, Roger N. Baker, died in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Melanie Ann baker of Louisville, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton.
Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Mrs. Baker bequeathed her body to the University of Louisville Medical School.

Dr. Norbert Berning, 83, of Park Hills, died at 1:40 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.
He was a retired orthopedic surgeon on staff of hospitals in Cincinnati and Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville, Ind.
He was a professor with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, was a past president of the Cincinnati Society of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Fracture Association and Tri-State Orthopedic Association.
He was a member of the Cincinnati Club and the Metropolitan Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Looney Berning; a brother, Richard J. Berning of Cincinnati; sisters, Margaret Wais and Mary Patricia Wood, both of Cincinnati.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Oris Cooper; daughters, Karen Jones of Ludlow and Shirley Thompson of Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Margaret West of Alexandria; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, John L. "Jack" Crowell, died in 1993.

He was a plant manager with Circle International and a member of Newport Eagles Airie No. 280.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Sebastian Fetters; daughters, Karen Ratliff of Erlanger and Kathy Deaton of Newport; a son, Tim Fetters of Newport; a stepson, Michael Turner of Newport; stepdaughters, Vera Fryman of Fort Mitchell and Tina Turner of Florence; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, George William Hardy, died in 1978.

He was a probation officer with Hamilton County, Ohio, Juvenile Court and athletic director of Boys' and Men's Athletics (CYO) in Cincinnati.
He was a member of St. Henry Church in Elsmere, was executive secretary of St. Vincent DePaul Society, and president of the Cincinnati Curia Legion of Mary.
He was a member of Particular Council of Cincinnati and the Legion of Mary.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Mary Coleman Littelmann; daughters, Veronica Schmidt of Independence, Mary Ellen Joyce and Beverly Carpenter, both of Cincinnati, and Anne Stiff of Edgewood; a sister, Dorothy Briede of Fairfield, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her husband, George E. Robinson, died in 1978.

Paul Schwartz, 86, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
He was the retired owner of Sparrow Trucking Co., a former Boy Scouts leader and a member of Big Brothers.
He was a former manager of the Newport Shopping Center and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
A son, Michael McDaniel, died in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Parrott Schwartz; sons, Kevin McDaniel of Bellevue and Marc Schwartz of Valrico, Fla.; daughters, Marna Mandarino of Ludlow, Karen McDaniel of Elsmere and Lisa Dove of Hopkinsville; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
