Kenneth 'Moose' Jones, police captain, bar owner
Kenneth "Moose" Jones was a well-known figure in Newport, spending more than 20 years on the police department and then operating popular bars in the city for another two decades.
"He loved Newport and was really committed to the city, " said Mr. Jones' daughter, Debbie Schmitz of Newport.
Mr. Jones, 75, of Wilder, died Tuesday of cancer at St. Elizabeth Hospice.
He rose to the rank of captain in the Newport Police Department during a 22-year career from 1951 through 1972.
Mr. Jones then worked 15 years at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati as director of security.
From the 1970s through the 1990s, he owned and operated several up-scale bars in Newport, including River City Landing and Captain's Cove.
He most recently worked as a host as the Tropicana bar at Newport on the Levee.
"Jeff Ruby (owner of the Tropicana) asked dad to come in and tell people stories about the old times in Newport because he knew them so well, " said Mrs. Schmitz.
Mr. Jones began his Newport police career in the juvenile department.
"Dad would bring home troubled kids and let them stay at our house until he could find placement for them, " his daughter recalled.
"Many times we would have extra kids in our house for a couple of weeks."
Mr. Jones was a captain in the detective unit when he retired from the Newport police and began security work at Deaconess.
"He loved that line of work, " said Mrs. Schmitz. "He also got a lot of enjoyment out of being around people at the bars he owned.
"There was something appealing about him to people of all ages. He got a lot out of life and liked to say, 'If you're not having fun, it's your own fault.' "

Dorothy Caldwell was teacher, volunteer
Dorothy Annabelle Caldwell would do anything to ride a horse, and she got her chance in the early 1930s as a volunteer for the Frontier Nursing Service.
Ms. Caldwell volunteered with the service in Leslie County during the summer, when she was off work from her regular job teaching schoolchildren.
"There were no roads there in 1933. It was a very rural area and the only way they could get to some of the people to provide medical care was on horseback, " said her brother, John Caldwell of Burlington.
"Some of the patients she would bring back to University Hospital, and at times, after the patients were released, they would stay at our house (in Burlington) until they were able to return home, " he said.
Ms. Caldwell, who died Monday at 95, joined the Boone County public schools in 1948 and taught at Burlington and Florence elementary schools.
In the 1960s, she was promoted to supervisor, traveling among the schools to ensure students were getting a proper education.
She was an extremely positive and intelligent person, and was "so easy to get along with, " said Watson Craft, a fellow teacher at Florence.
After she retired from the Boone County schools, she worked in the same capacity for the Campbell County public schools until she retired again in 1975.
She often helped her good friend, Caroline Williams, with art projects. The two once spent three weeks driving an old station wagon through Canada with Williams' dog, "Nubby."
Next to teaching, Ms. Caldwell loved her dogs, cats and horses. In her spare time, she also edited newsletters for the Dinsmore Homestead.
Devoted to her brother, who was blinded in an accident at age 13, she spent a lot of time helping him through high school and college.
She herself graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati in 1927, earned a degree in philosophy from the University of Cincinnati, and received a master's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1960.
She moved to Florence Park in 1996 and continued to visit her home in Burlington throughout her stay.
