Rev. William Crumes, local civil rights leader
Rev. William E. Crumes Jr., a Cincinnati civil rights leader in the 1950s and '60s and senior pastor of the non-denominational Church of the Living God in Avondale, died Sunday.
He was 89.
Rev. Crumes also was a national leader in his church, serving as chief bishop of the church's national organization.
In the 1950s, he led a march to help African-Americans gain the right to swim in the swimming pool at Coney Island amusement park.
In 1963, while serving as president of the Avondale Community Council, he led an estimated 14, 000 people on a march in downtown Cincinnati to protest discrimination in education, jobs and housing.
A native of Louisville, Rev. Crumes became a member of the Church of the Living God in 1935 and was appointed pastor of the Cincinnati church in 1948. He served as general secretary, vice chief bishop and chief bishop of the church's national organization.
Rev. Crumes attended Indiana State University and the University of Cincinnati and earned his bachelor of arts degree in theology and seminary studies from God's Bible College in Cincinnati, where he graduated cum laude.
He also received an honorary doctorate degree from Temple Bible College.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Crumes; a daughter, Vernita Mays-Hill, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His remains will lie in state at the Church of the Living God, 434 Forest Ave., in Avondale, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Funeral services for local church members and the community will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Formal services for the church's national organization will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Pauline Johnson, had strong desire to learn
Pauline C. Johnson, 69, had four young sons at home in the late 1960s when she decided to take a couple of classes at Northern Kentucky Community College.
By 1973, she had a master's degree in education from Xavier University after receiving a bachelor's degree with honors from Thomas More College.
"She said, 'I want to take one or two courses in college, ' " said her husband, Charles Johnson. "The next thing you know, she was going full blast and has all these degrees."
Mrs. Johnson, of London, formerly of Covington, died Tuesday at Marymount Medical Center, London.
She put her education to work as a teacher. She started the English department at Villa Madonna Academy in Villa Hills, and served as a reading specialist at Newport High School and director of special programs at Southern Ohio College. She also taught at Lighthouse Academy.
On top of her degrees in education, Mrs. Johnson also studied optometry because the couple's youngest son suffered from dyslexia and she wanted to understand his condition, her husband said.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.
Surviving in addition to her husband are sons, Richard Johnson of Taylor Mill, Michael Johnson of Fort Mill, S.C., John Johnson of Evansville, Ind., and Joseph Johnson of Johnson City, Tenn.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Laurel County Public Library, 120 College Park Drive, London, Ky. 40741.
Nancy Ann McDowell Bahr, 62, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a champion dog breeder and owner of Morning Star Kennel, and a member of Community Pentecostal Church in Independence, Open Door Community Church of God in Erlanger, the American Cocker Club and Cincinnati Cocker Club.
Survivors include her husband, Curt Bahr; a daughter, Sheila Young of Fort Mitchell; sons, Steve Bahr of Morning View and Scott Bahr of Fort Thomas; her mother, Ruth Reckers Tangney of Erlanger; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Community Pentecostal Church, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.
Arnold "Buck" Ambrose Easton, 86, of Crittenden, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Easton; daughters, Janet Anderson and Kathy Caminiti, both of Burlington, Joan Carey of Florence and Linda Berkemeier of Crittenden; a sister, Sally Prather of Florence; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were at noon today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial was in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.
Vernon Ellis, 82, of Warsaw, died Tuesday at Kings Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind. He was a self-employed electrician, a member of St. Joseph Church in Warsaw and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Thomas V. Ellis and Richard E. Ellis, both of Warsaw; a sister, Nancy Jo Grobmeyer of Carrollton; a daughter, Verna Lee Moore of Warsaw; stepchildren, Mark Mertz, Bobby Mertz, Eddie Mertz, Barbara Simpkin, Debbie Johnson and Brenda Roberts; 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Ghent. Memorials are suggested to Gallatin County Life Squad, 501 Main Cross, Warsaw, Ky. 41095.
Doris Audrey Ruth Fultz, 73, of Covington, died at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, James Fultz; a son, James Fultz Jr. of Edgewood; sisters, Sally E. Taschner of Sebewaing, Mich., Mary E. Wright of Inverness, Fla., Sadie Embs of Clay City and Jenny W. Fultz of Fort Thomas; a brother, Paul Jones of Andalusia, Ala.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Loretta A. LaFever Gabe, 93, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Elsmere, died Saturday at Tandem Lake Parker Health Care Center in Lakeland. She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Her husband, Fred G. Gabe, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Ann McCarty of Lakeland; a brother, Charles LaFever of Latonia; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Joseph Lee, 62, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Fort Thomas, died March 1 at Brooksville, Fla., Health Care Center. He was a retired master electrician and a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. A son, David Lee, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Amy Lee of Aurora, Colo.; his parents, Jim and Bertha Lee of Fort Thomas; a sister, Patty Lee of Fort Thomas; and brothers, James Lee of Houghton Lake, Mich., George Lee of Fort Thomas and Louie Lee of Castle Rock, Colo.

Victor Raymond Mullins, 81, of Florence, died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired supervisor with Cincinnati Gas & Electric, a deacon and Sunday school superintendent with Heritage Assembly of God Fellowship in Florence and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Arra Lee Chitwood Mullins; daughters, Vicki Lee Eaton of Chicago, Brenda Louise Petrey of Jellico, Tenn., and Jean Link of Tampa, Fla.; sons, Darrell Thomas Mullins of Florence and Alan James Mullins of Loveland, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Heritage Assembly of God Fellowship. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Travis Rimer, 22, of Verona, died at 11:18 p.m. Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a heating, ventilation and air conditioning repairman.
Survivors include sons, Christian Michael Rimer of Corinth and Jonathan Patrick Rimer of Verona; daughters, Catherine Martin and Kelsey Rimer, both of Corinth, and Lainie Zimmerman of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; his parents, Robert L. Rimer Sr. and Alesha Loman Rimer of Morning View; brothers, Robert L. Rimer Jr. of Independence and Greg A. Rimer of Morning View; a sister, Sherenee I. Vehige of Crittenden; grandmother, Thelma "Irennie" Coubert Loman of Taylor Mill; and great-grandmother, Mary Loman of Frankfort.

James Arnold Swanson, 73, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at his home. He was the former owner of Bluegrass Florist, an artist and pianist, and a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Florence. He was a member of the Cincinnati Men's Chorus. His wife, Joanne E. Swanson, died in 1991.
Survivors include daughters, Lisa E. Swanson of Evanston, Ill., Kriste G. Swanson of Alexandria, Rebecca I. Swanson of Oak Park, Ill., and Cynthia E. Swanson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; brothers, Sam Swanson of Newport and Paul Swanson of Erlanger; and six grandchildren.

Mary B. Trauth, 79, of Cold Spring, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Trauth; a daughter, Robin Trauth of Newport; sisters, Anna Harper of Cold Spring, Betty Worthington of Lincoln County, Joanne Soard of Newport and Carol Bays of Burlington; brothers, Kenneth Soard of Cold Spring and Joe Soard of Florida; and two grandchildren.

Grace Younkers, 83, of Latonia, died Wednesday at her daughter's home in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
