Marjorie Molony, filled life with faith, accolades
For her work creating a volunteer program at Covington Catholic High School, former Post employee Marjorie Moore Molony was named one of the Women of the Year in 1969.
That was all well and good, but the Crestview Hills resident deserved more than that, said her son, Kevin Molony of Fort Mitchell.
"Her sons were extremely proud to see her named Woman of the Year, but we see her as mother of a lifetime, " he said of the recognition given annually by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Mrs. Molony, who died Wednesday at 83, grew up in Covington. Her future husband, Walter J. Molony, lived just a few blocks away.
They married
when he returned home from serving overseas in World War II, and she went to work as a journalist.
She spent seven years in the profession, first with United Press International in Cleveland, and then as a copy editor for The Post. She retired in 1947 to start a family.
She raised five boys who became teen-agers during the turbulent '60s and early '70s, her son said, and "that alone ought to qualify her for something."
All the boys attended Covington Catholic. At a time when the school had no female staff or students, Mrs. Molony organized 65 volunteers to help teachers at the school, so that the teachers could concentrate on teaching.
Other schools invited her to talk about the program, and she also explained it at an education conference in Dayton, Ohio, her son said.
"She showed us the value of volunteer work, " he said.
Mrs. Molony visited Ireland, where she knocked on doors to learn about her family heritage. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of the Hibernians, Our Lady of Knock Division, Boone County.
She also focused her life around her faith. She was a member of the St. Mary's Ladies Society at Blessed Sacrament Church. She made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, where some believe the Virgin Mary has appeared.
"She didn't just talk the talk, she walked the walk, " her son said.
Mrs. Molony played bridge with the same partner for 30 years, organizing bridge games and tournaments. She was a very good bowler in her day, and she always had a book with her.
"She grabbed life, and lived it to its fullest, " her son said. "It's nice to have someone like her in powerful places now."
