Roy Center, farmer, liked to tell jokes
Roy Center of Lakeside Park was a farmer and a security guard -- and a joy to be around.
"He was so funny and he was always going around laughing and telling jokes, " said his daughter, Sandra Center of Lakeside Park.
"He never met a stranger. He could talk to someone three states away and still find a connection."
Mr. Center died Thursday at Villa Springs Care Center in Erlanger. He was 87.
A native of Stanton, Mr. Center moved to Northern Kentucky after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He served with distinction, and was awarded an Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze service stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze service star, a Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Center worked as a security guard at Nutone Inc. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Madisonville for 21 years.
But for much of the time, he also farmed. Mr. Center raised cattle, tobacco and hay on farms in Bracken, Campbell and Pendleton counties.
"He just loved to farm more than anything, but he had to make a living, " said his daughter.
"So while he was farming, he also held down a full-time job."
Mr. Center was a member of the VFW Post in Stanton and the Disabled American Veterans.
He and his wife, Rose, were married
55 years.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Center is survived by a son, Roy Center Jr., of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Ray Center of Clark County; a half-brother, Carl Center of Stanton; a sister, Lettie Jane Rogers of Stanton; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger.
Visitation will be there Monday from 5 to 9 p.m.
Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Gloria B. Daniel, 79, of Elsmere, formerly of Florence, died at 12:50 a.m. Friday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.
She was a homemaker and a member of Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Woman's Club. Her husband, Ernest F. Daniel preceded her in death. He died July 14, 2001. Her son Ernie died Feb. 22, 2004.
Survivors include sons, Roger Daniel of Crestview Hills, Gregory Daniel of Glencoe, Christopher Daniel of Hebron; a daughter, Cynthia Fry of Newport Coast, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Schweitzer of Crescent Springs; brothers, Harry Barnaclo of Montgomery, Ohio, Arthur Barnaclo of North College Hill, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.

William W. (Bill) Hester, 64, of Taylor Mill, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Edgewood.
He was a painter for the Drees Co. and a member of Community Pentecostal Church, Independence.
Survivors include his wife, Linda (Mastin) Hester; a son, Sonny Hester of Dry Ridge; daughters, Lee Ann Haggard of Fairfield, Ohio; a brother, Terry Hester of Brooksville; eleven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.

Edna Jackson, 69, of Dry Ridge died Thursday at Grant Manor Health Care Center.

She was formerly employed by First-Last Chance and Woodland Inn.

Clara "Rose" (Dunn) Mains, 66, of Falmouth, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood.
She was a member of Flagg Springs Baptist Church, California.
Survivors include her daughters, Cindy McKenzie and Sondy Fitzenberger both of Falmouth; sisters, Emma Earls of Morningview, Betty Bihl and Alta Wanner both of Alexandria, Carolyn Nelson of California, and Esther Pangburn of Cold Spring; and four grandchildren.

Cecil Bailey McCreary, 80, of Sanders, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton.
He was a retired farmer and heavy equipment operator for Hughes Construction, and a World War II Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn M. McCreary, in February 2002, and his son, Garry Cecil McCreary.
Survivors include a daughter, Diann Shelton of Sanders; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Austin Oak, 85, of Sanders, died Thursday at Owenton Manor. He was a retired mail carrier.

James E. "Jimmy C" Satterwhite, 84, of Jonesville, died Friday at St. Luke West Hospital, Florence.
He was a farmer and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was a member of the Willis Lodge No. 9 of the Independent Order of the Oddfellows and the Masonic Lodge No. 123 F&AM; of Owenton.
Survivors include his wife, Marceleen Webster Satterwhite; stepsons, Max McComas of Ft. Mitchell and Donald McComas of Corinth; one stepdaughter, Carol Pettit of Florence; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Barbara Suzanne Thomas, 52, of California, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker, a member of St. Peter and Paul Church in California and a cafeteria worker with St. Peter and Paul School.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence "L.T." Thomas; daughters, Amy Schneider, Michelle Thomas and Beth Thomas, all of California; a sister, Karen Goins of Butler; a brother, Paul Huck of California; and three grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation was held on Friday. Grants Lick. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, California.

Lucille A. Waikins, 88, of DeLand, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Thursday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, Fla.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the United Church of Christ and the Order of the Eastern Star, Covington.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Jerry L. Waikins of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a brother, Billy Clare of DeLand; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and Cremation Service, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., is in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, South Fort Mitchell.
