Samuel Gamble, 91, bar owner and mayor
On his way to visit his sister in Detroit, Samuel "Sam" Keen Gamble planned to stop in Walton to visit some friends he knew lived there.
Mr. Gamble, who died Wednesday, liked the town so well that he made it his home, becoming a prominent businessman and then mayor.
Born in Magoffin County, he lived in Louisville when he was younger, said his wife, Erie Gamble, and worked there at Sears and Roebuck.
That's where he met Bob and Jo Stephenson, a couple who owned a bar and grill in Walton. When he visited them about 1950, they gave him a job. He lived with them for about 15 years, his wife said.
Mr. Gamble ended up buying the restaurant from the Stephensons and calling it Sam's Bar & Grill. When he retired from the restaurant business, he ran Sam's Sharp-All, a sharpening service. He served as the town's mayor for about two years during the 1970s, she said.
"He was a loveable person, " she said. "He treated everyone like he wanted to be treated."
Mr. Gamble was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion.
