Catherine Kroness, 85, helped people
Catherine Reenan "Caddie" Kroness loved to help people.
As assistant director of Covington Senior Citizens, she helped elderly people. As a Red Cross volunteer, she helped disaster victims. And, as a volunteer for Be Concerned, a Covington social service agency, she helped poor people.
"She was just that kind of a person, " said Mrs. Kroness' son, John Kroness of Edgewood. "She was a quiet, unassuming person who enjoyed helping others."
Mrs. Kroness, 85, of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell. After rearing four children, Mrs. Kroness began concentrating on helping others. As a volunteer worker for the Red Cross, she sometimes would be gone from home for several weeks on assignments aiding victims of hurricanes and other disasters.
"And she loved her work at the Senior Citizens organization, " said her son. "It was much more than a job to her."
Mrs. Kroness also volunteered one day a week at Be Concerned, which operates a food pantry and a clothing and housewares store for needy people.
Her hobbies were sewing and reading.
"She read every single day, " said her son. "She was an avid reader and loved to read about anything."
Other survivors include daughters, Cathie Feldhaus of Delhi Township, Pattie Kroness of Chicago and Helen Moul of Fort Mitchell; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were today at Blessed Sacrament Church. There was no visitation. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Mary Brearton, 67, of Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Carlos Calvert, 66, of Dover, died at 9:27 a.m. Wednesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a self-employed mechanic and owner of Calvert Racing.
Survivors include his wife, Rena Calvert; daughters, Debbie Stacy of Wallingford, Connie Hamilton of Flemingsburg, Lisa Caufman of Marion, Va., Linda Kay Clemons of Lexington and Carla Duncan of Bowling Green; sons, Edwards Earl Evans of Dover, Billy Calvert of Lexington, Michael Calvert of Bowling Green, Clarence Smith and Timmy Calvert, both of Maysville; sisters, Juanita Shepherd of Paris and Darlene Morgan of Florida; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Charleston Bottoms Cemetery, Maysville.
Paul R. Dahlenburg, 71, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was the former owner of Dahlenburg Plumbing in Florence and a member of the Master Plumbers Association. His first wife, Myrna Dahlenburg, died in 1959.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Dahlenburg; sons, Richard P. Dahlenburg of Crittenden and Robert A. Dahlenburg of Hebron; a daughter, Patricia A. Dahlenburg of Hebron; sisters, Joann Bode of Crestview Hills and Evelyn Depenbrock of Florence; a brother, James Albert Dahlenburg of Villa Hills; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Anne Pauly Droege, 82, of Park Hills, died at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John F. Droege, died in 2002.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Droege of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Sister Mary Margaret, S.N.D., and Margaret Kuhlman, both of Park Hills, Jo Anne Hoppenjans of Sylvania, Ohio, and Terry Harmon of Elkins, W.Va.; brothers, Tony Pauly of Elsmere and Paul Pauly of Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Helen Lempke of Lakeside Park; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Clarence Earl Hargett, 68, of Augusta, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.
He was a retired manager with Johnson Controls Co., Florence, a past fire chief with the Augusta Volunteer Fire Department and a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Habermehl Hargett; daughters, Myra McElheney of Hebron, Monica Meier of Taylor Mill and Alyson Kohlman of Florence; sons, Jerry Hargett of Cincinnati, Joe Hargett of Independence and Arin Hargett of Hebron; a sister, Erma Dale Kirk of Augusta; a brother, Stanley Hargett Jr. of Augusta; and 16 grandchildren.

LaVerne Braun Hawthorne, 75, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Raymond Hawthorne, died in 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Berling of Fort Thomas; a sister, Shirley O'Rouke of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Carol Lee Huls, 60, of Florence, died Wednesday at her home. She was a teacher with Burlington Elementary School and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church. She was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and Civitan Club of Northern Kentucky.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Huls; and a niece, Melissa Sherman of Williamstown.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Judge Newell "Pete" Jett, 81, of Augusta, died at 7:20 a.m. Thursday at Augusta Health Care Center.
He was a farmer and a member of Chatham Christian Church. His wife, Margie F. Bloomfield Jett, died in 1996. A son, William Newell Jett, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Jett of Augusta; daughters, Bonnie Jean Jett of Georgetown and Patty Esham of Vanceburg; a sister, Alave Bell of Augusta; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Augusta Christian Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.

William Russell McClain, 75, of Erlanger, died Thursday at his home.
He was a construction worker and machine press operator.
Survivors include his wife, June McClain; a son, Terry McClain of Erlanger; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Henderson of Florence; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Beverly Usleman Shay, 65, of Covington, died at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday at Batavia, Ohio Nursing Center.
She was a homemaker and a volunteer with the American Red Cross, where she taught CPR classes. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Cold Spring. Her husband, Paul Shay, died in 1998.
Survivors include daughters, Robin Shears of Erlanger and Tracy Klette of Covington; a son, Tom W. Shay of Covington; sisters, Margie Clinebell of Covington and Linda Mills of Erlanger; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

William James Shields, 80, of Warsaw, died Wednesday at Carroll County Hospital, Carrollton.
He was a train engineer with the U.S. Naval Station in Port Chicago, Calif., and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, William "Stump" Shields of Verona; sisters, Nelda Yates of Hot Springs, Ark., and Gail Cuneo of Burlington; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Kendal Michelle Smith, 16, Crittenden, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a student at Walton-Verona High School, and was a member of the church Senior Beta Club, Art Club and Honor Roll, and was a member of the school's soccer team. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and a volunteer with Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her parents, Patrick L. and Susan Evans Smith of Crittenden; grandparents, Richard and Marjorie Smith of Bloomington, Ind., and Alan and Jean Evans of Independence; and great-grandmother, Addie M. Spivey of Coldwater, Miss.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Walton-Verona High School, Walton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Marie C. Sansom Williams, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a Campbell County juvenile officer and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Camp Springs. Her husband, Hank Williams, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sisters, Edna Jackson of Middletown, Ohio, and Daisy Sansom of Ludlow; nieces and nephews.
