Mary Marie Brearton, Latonia store worker

Mary Marie Brearton was a fixture at the Meijer store -- formerly Twin Fair -- in Latonia during the 1970s and 1980s.

She last worked at the snack bar, and "if you grew up in Latonia, you probably knew my mom, " said her daughter, Theresa Maines of Florence.

"Everything was 'honey' this and 'sweetie' that. 'Sweetie' was her favorite word.

"Everybody just liked my mom."

Ms. Brearton died Thursday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. The Latonia resident was 67.

Mrs. Brearton grew up in Covington. After the Meijer store in Latonia closed, she went to work on an assembly line at the Anixter Co. in Latonia, cleaning used telephones for Cincinnati Bell until her retirement in the mid-1990s.

Maines described her mother, who was a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia, as "a true Catholic."

She also was independent, Maines said, even though her mother never learned to drive.

"She loved to walk, " said Maines. "She would just take her little buggy and walk up to the shopping center and get her groceries.

"It was a shopping cart she pulled on two wheels. She called it her Cadillac."

But perhaps most importantly, "She lived for her grandchildren, " Maines said of her mother. "They all called her Mamaw."
