Pauline Lanter, 99, a teacher for 31 years
Pauline McCormick Lanter was one of the most active 99-year-olds around.
"She drove herself everywhere until just a few months ago, " said Rev. Stephen Rice of Williamstown. "She was amazing."
Mrs. Lanter, of Williamstown, who would have turned 100 on May 1, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice in Covington.
"She talked about wanting to live to be 100, " said Rice.
Longevity ran in Mrs. Lanter's family. Her mother, Montana Belle Carter McCormick, lived to be 106.
Mrs. Lanter retired in 1973 from the Grant County school system after teaching 31 years in elementary schools, including Childers, Cartersville, Mason and Dry Ridge.
She previously worked eight years as Grant County deputy court clerk and eight years at the Grant County Deposit Bank.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Lanter was the oldest member of Williamstown Baptist Church, just as her mother had been when she died in 1988.
"Pauline was more faithful in church attendance than many folks half her age, " said Rice, pastor of the church.
"Her faith was very important to her. If she was healthy enough to be there, she was there, and she probably had driven herself there.
"She also would pick up friends and take them to the doctor. She was always helping someone do something. That's the kind of person she was.
"She was very meek and very happy. She really enjoyed life. She had such a positive outlook. She appreciated the smallest things that you would do for her."
Mrs. Lanter was a member of the Williamstown Women's Club, the Carlsbad Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, Williamstown Homemakers and the Grant County Historical Society.
Her husband, Roger Franklin Lanter, died in 1988 after 58 years of marriage.
