Norman L. Hager, 72, Ludlow school teacher
Students looked forward to having Norman Lee Hager for a teacher.
Mr. Hager, 72, who died Thursday at his home in Fort Wright, taught more than 40 years in Ludlow Independent Schools, first as a junior high teacher, then as a speech therapist in the elementary school. That school recently named its media center for him.
He was known as a fun, innovative teacher who always found ways to entertain himself and the students, said his daughter, Medrith Lee Norman of Lexington.
A very patriotic man, he would have younger students march from class to class singing patriotic songs. But he would have his fifth-graders put on very serious dramas such as Shakespeare's "Macbeth."
He often bought stuffed animals or books to give away to his students.
He had nicknames for all of them. "He never met a kid he didn't believe in, " his daughter said. "He found something they were good at, and bragged on them for doing it, whatever it was."
Mr. Hager's wife, Jody, worked at the elementary school as a secretary. They were inseparable.
"He was in love with her every day from the day he met her, " she said. "They did everything together."
They met when both were in college at the University of Kentucky and married
in 1967. All her friends thought he looked just like James Dean, their daughter said.
Mr. Hager did some acting at the Pioneer Playhouse in Danville, directed school plays and sponsored the drama club. He had a bit part in a movie, "April Love, " starring Shirley Jones, which was made in 1957.
"You blink, and you miss the part, " his daughter said.
Mr. Ludlow was a Navy veteran, a lifelong member of the Ludlow PTA, a member of the Ludlow Educational Foundation and was very involved in the Republican Party.
"We never went anywhere in Northern Kentucky that he didn't know anyone, " his daughter said. "He was like one of those guys who everybody who met him had a different story about him."
