Harlan Grimes, self-taught engineer
Harlan E. Grimes was so intelligent, his wife says, that he taught himself how to be an electrical engineer.
Mr. Grimes, 87, of Bromley, died Friday at Woodcrest Manor in Elsmere.
"He was an unusual man, " his wife, Elizabeth "Bee" Grimes said. "He could do anything he set his mind to."
Mrs. Grimes said her husband didn't go to college but instead taught himself just about anything he was interested in learning, including electrical engineering. He was a retired electrical engineer with U.S. Drillhead Co., Cincinnati.
She said her husband enjoyed operating amateur radios and was a member of the Greater Cincinnati Amateur Radio Association when he was younger. He also liked helping his two sons with their schoolwork.
Mr. Grimes also was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Bromley, Unity Lodge No. 478 F&AM; in Ludlow and the Scottish Rite Valley of Covington. He was an honorary member of the Bromley Fire Department, a founding parent of the Bromley Boy Scout Troop and an Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include sons, Tom Grimes of Bromley and Ed Grimes of Edgewood; a brother, Clarence Grimes of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Bromley. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Margaret M. Catanzaro-Wolfer, 79, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert William Wolfer, died in 1991. Sons, Doug Wolfer and Pat Wolfer, both died in 1989.
Survivors include sons, Jeff Wolfer of Kansas City and Greg Wolfer of Ouzike, Alaska; daughters, Cindy Hurm of Indianapolis, Anita Dennis of Independence and Amy Duke of Morgantown, Ind.; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Victory Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Phyllis Ann Kiskaden Collier, 60, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at her home.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela Debrueler; brothers, Renaker Kiskaden Jr., David Kiskaden, Donald Kiskaden and Bobby Kiskaden; sisters, Pat Wilson and Cathy Moore; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at noon today at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Burial will be in Wagners Chapel Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 506 Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
Bobby Ray Curnutt, 46, of Owenton, died Sunday at his home. He was a car dealer and owner of Owenton Automart, a member of the National Rifle Association, the Horse Club and Glencoe Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte King Curnutt; daughters, Carrie Taylor of Owenton, Cassidy Hafley of Owenton and Tiffany King, at home; sons, Joe King, Matt King and Isaiah Warren, all at home; brothers, Benny Curnutt of Erlanger, Jerry Mauk of Independence, Jimmy Cowan and Doug Cowan, both of Newport; sisters, Ava Griffin of Cincinnati, Ann Cowan of Newport, Tina Tucker of Melbourne and Linda Hallman of Erlanger; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glencoe Church of Christ. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
Georgia Lee "Penny" Renaker Earle, 83, of Berry, died Sunday at her home. She was a teacher with Berry and Westside elementary schools, and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cynthiana. She was a member of Rees-Lebus Women's Circle, Daughters of the American Revolution, Democratic Women's Club, Harrison County Women's Club, Harrison Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary and Harrison County Retired Teachers Association. Her first husband, Theodore Reed Renaker Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Kelly Earle; a daughter, Nancy Gay Swainhart of Fort Thomas; a son, Theodore Reed Renaker Jr. of Lexington; a stepson, Gary Fisher Earle; a stepdaughter, Patricia Ann Earle of Lexington; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. David Stuart Flanagan, 80, of Fort Wright, died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at his daughter's home. He was a retired transportation manager with Midland Enterprises of Cincinnati, a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Thomas and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Shirley Mae Chaney Flanagan, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia Schwierjohann of Erlanger, Kathleen Sberna of Cincinnati, Nancy Flanagan of Baltimore and Ruth Duvall of Erlanger; a son, Michael Flanagan of Covington; and 11 grandchildren.

Judy Hartig, 59, of Melbourne, died Sunday at her home.

Roy C. Johnson, 82, of Owenton, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Owenton. He was a farmer and retired employee of the Kentucky Highway Department, a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Owenton and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Johnson; stepdaughters, Sharon Cook of Dayton, Ohio, and Bonnie Lawrence of Piqua, Ohio; a stepson, Jonathan Alford of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Geraldine L. "Gerrie" Meyer, 72, of Covington, died at 12:07 a.m. Saturday at Mary Rose Mission, Covington. She was a retired cafeteria worker with the Covington Board of Education and a member of Mother of God Church in Covington. She was a member of the Mother of God Social Concern. Her husband, George Meyer, died in 1995.
Survivors include sons, Gary Meyer and Glen Meyer, both of Covington, and Greg Meyer of Burlington; a daughter, Gail Meyer of Covington; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Ernest D. Tobis, 87, of Covington, died at 6:50 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired custodian with Thomas More College and a member of St. John Church, Covington. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Klinchok Tobis of Covington; a daughter, Betsy Tobis of Covington; sons, Ernest H. Tobis of Covington and John Tobis of Brooksville; a brother, John Tobis of San Antonio; and five grandchildren.
