Grover Jones, 77, was a 'super grandfather'
Grover E. Jones used to take his family to Cumberland Lake in the summer for his favorite hobbies: fishing and boating.
"He was a super grandfather, " said son-in-law Jerry McGonegle of Florence. "He was outgoing and gentle."
When Mr. Jones wasn't basking in the sun at Cumberland Lake, he was at the beach in Florida with his wife, Ruth. McGonegle said he fell in love with Pensacola, Fla., when he was stationed there while in the Navy.
Mr. Jones, 77, of Covington, died at 5:25 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was generous and honest, his son-in-law said.
"He told you what was on his mind, " he said. "He always spoke the truth."
Mr. Jones was retired as a manager from Standard Oil Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington and American Legion Post No. No. 203, Latonia.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth J. Jones; a son, Mike Jones of Brookville, Ind.; daughters, Jeniffer Schaffner of Fort Wright, Susan McGonegle and Ruth Schworer, both of Florence, Peggy Ann McFadden of Fort Mitchell and Jeanette Fabre of Erlanger; a sister, Wanda Johnson of Covington; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or the Kidney Foundation, 2330 Victory Parkway East, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Glenn "Monk" Adkins Jr., 46, of Erlanger, died at 8 a.m. Saturday at his home. He was a Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include his parents, Mildred and Glenn Adkins Sr. of Covington; and brothers, Jerry Adkins of Covington, Anthony Adkins and Jason Adkins, both of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Camp Nelson Cemetery, Nicholasville.
Helen Gates, 90, of Fort Wright, died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired owner of Gates Records and Appliances in Covington and the Gates Knitting Room, and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington. Her husband, Charlie Gates, died in 1993.
Survivors include a brother, James Frishe of Covington.
Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington. A reception at the church will follow immediately. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Sandusky, Ind. Eleanor Juanita Grimes, 83, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a director of commercial loans with Ohio National Insurance and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church, the Florence Lioness Club and Erlanger Lioness Club.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Grimes; daughters, Karen Aker of Fairfield, Ohio, and Sharon Schiman of Liberty Township, Ohio; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Judy P. Hartig, 59, of Melbourne, died at 3:59 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis M. Hartig; a son, George Baker of Owenton; daughters, Cheri Baker of Owenton and Dorothy Jean Baker of Silver Grove; brothers, Jack Wainscott of Silver Grove and Bill Wainscott of Newport; sisters, Dorothy Hartig and Elizabeth Stefen, both of Melbourne, and Donna Wainscott of Bellevue; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Dillard Huff, 71, of Covington, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Huff.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation was at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. C&C; Mortuary Services, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Sonya Christine Schmidt, 81, of Union, died Sunday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Timothy Church, Union.
Survivors include her husband, Henry J. Schmidt Jr.; daughters, Bonnie L. Coniglio of Cleveland and Christine D. Kenton of Hebron; sons, Dale F. Schmidt and Gary D. Schmidt, both of Hebron, Loren W. Schmidt of Seattle and Henry J. Schmidt III of Highland Park, Ill.; sisters, Helen Reese of Windsor, Ohio, and Rose Young of Parma, Ohio; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Edward Sterling, 78, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a courtesy driver with Florence Buick and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Phyllis Sterling, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Cheryl Garrison, Peggy Schumacher and Sandra White, all of Florence, and Veronica Goldsberry of Burlington; sons, Ronald Sterling of Independence and Tim Sterling of Florence; a sister, Janice Eubank of Independence; a brother, Gerald Sterling of Williamstown; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Etha Jane Goins Sumpter, 67, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Full Gospel Church, Corinth. Her first husband, Alton Goins, and second husband, Jack Mitchell Sumpter Jr., both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Ronnie Goins of Dry Ridge and Ricky Goins of Dayton, Texas; daughters, Diane Hamilton of Dayton, Texas, Kay Monhollen and Julia Hornsby, both of Crittenden, Donna Rose of Corinth and Helen Barnes of Berry; sisters, Nora Parker of Jonesville, Betty Jackson of Falmouth and Janet Stephens of Dry Ridge; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Zelda M. Switzer, 78, of Florence, died Sunday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was a wire technician with Post-Glover Electric Co. and a member of Lakeside Auxiliary of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423, Elsmere. A son, John Switzer, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Darlene Peddicord of Burlington and Karen Mayfield of Independence; a son, Kevin Switzer of Inverness, Fla.; a brother, John Hughes of Florence; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Leroy B. Wagner, 78, of Newport, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired employee of Wiedemann Brewery, Newport, and a member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 in Alexandria and the Catholic Order of Foresters. His first wife, Rose Weinel Wagner, died in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Wagner; daughters, Betty Jo Hornat of Hindsdale, Ill., Carol Stewart of Silver Grove and Paula Wagner of Melbourne; sons, Dennis Wagner of Alexandria, Donald Wagner of Camp Springs and Kenneth Wagner of Crestview Hills; stepdaughters, Michelle Cobb of Kodak, Ind., Kathleen Hafer of Spring City, Tenn., Amy Lou Horvath of Fort Thomas and Pauline Joplin of San Leon, Texas; stepsons, Anthony Steffen and Philip Steffen, both of Highland Heights, Christopher Steffen of Latonia, Harold Steffen Jr. and Jeffrey Steffen, both of Alexandria; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Neola Combs Watkins, 80, of Florence, died Monday at her home. She was a dispatcher with Dot Cab Co., Yellow Cab Co. and Baker-West Side Cab Co., all in Newport. Her husband, Charlie Watkins, died in 2000. A daughter, Margaret Shelton, died in 1998.
Survivors include sons, John Watkins of Cold Spring and Charles Watkins of Taylor Mill; daughters, Hurshlene Pollitt of Germantown, Hendalee Doane of Florence, Elizabeth Powers of Park Hills, Darlene Ward of Richmond, Margie Ward of Independence and Angela Watters of Covington; brothers, Christopher Columbus Combs of Walton, Junior Combs and Esque Combs, both of Louisville; sisters, Essie Moore of Campton, Shirley Lewis of Somerset and Cornia Petry of Dayton, Ohio; 42 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Dora Luzetta Westfall, 84, of Crittenden, died Monday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Crittenden Baptist Church and Crittenden Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a son, Gerald Westfall of Crittenden; a brother, Hartsel Hayes of Rockcave, W.Va.; sisters, Wilma Harmon of Buckhannon, W.Va., Shirley Bosley of Saberton, W.Va., and Ruby Wheaton of Middlefield, Ohio; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
