Bea Hemsath, helped keep family together

Bea Hemsath raised six children, the last three of them by herself after her husband died.

"It was tough, but the kept everybody together, " said her son, Thomas E. Hemsath of Crestview Hills. "She worked and cared for us. What else can you ask for?"

She grew up in the Rosedale neighborhood of Covington, and graduated from Covington Holmes High School.

She married Richard Nicholas Hemsath, who owned his own grocery, Hemsath Grocery, at Southern and Huntington in Latonia. He died in 1965, at age 52.

Mrs. Hemsath tried to keep the business going, but none of her children were interested in it, and she wound up selling it. After it changed hands, it became a bar, the Huntington Hut.

Mrs. Hemsath was retired from the former Coppins Department Store in Covington, where she worked as a clerk.

She was a parishioner of Holy Cross Church in Latonia for at least 70 years, her son said. She was an active member of the church St. Helen's Society.

She never missed watching a UK basketball game, and her children and grandchildren would often watch the game with her at her house.

She lived in the same home in Taylor Mill for 55 years. The family was blessed with some great neighbors who helped care for Mrs. Hemsath in recent years, her son said.

She wanted to stay independent as long as she could. "If you're widowed at 50 years old, and you raise three children, you don't tend to rely and depend on a lot of people, " her son said.
