Rita E. Elsener, 84, avid bowler and sports fan
Rita E. Sauer Elsener was a very young 84-year-old.
The Fort Thomas resident, who died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, was a very good bowler for her age, regularly rolling from 150 to 170, said her daughter, Rita Anderson of Elk Grove, Calif.
She would still get down on the floor to play with her seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She learned to swim when she was 55, after her doctor told her that arthritis would put her in a wheelchair if she didn't. To the end, she still swam three times a day at the YMCA in Fort Thomas.
She wasn't afraid of new things, her daughter said. In December, she had acupuncture treatment for some arthritis pain in her neck.
She cleaned her own apartment, washed her own car and shopped for her own groceries. She kept up with the latest fashions, and sometimes wore clothes that were probably too young for her, her daughter said.
An avid Reds fan, she listened to games on the radio while wearing her Reds cap. If the team was losing, she wore the cap backward.
She also followed the Bengals, and while watching a game, could give her daughter a play-by-play when her daughter was still trying to find the ball.
She'll be buried with her Reds cap, her crucifix and rosary, her daughter said.
Mrs. Elsener might have lived to be 100 if she hadn't choked on a piece of meat while alone in her apartment. It left her brain dead, her daughter said, and she didn't want to live on life support.
She was a member of St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas, where she was a member of the church choir.
Her husband, Ralph P. Elsener, died in 1991. He was the love of her life, and they were married
a little more than 50 years, her daughter said.
