John Krumpelman, a life-long pharmacist
John Edward Krumpelman started in the pharmacy business when he was a teen-ager, making deliveries on his bicycle for a Covington pharmacy on Scott Street.
Mr. Krumpelman, who died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, would stay in the business all his life.
He studied the trade at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1966, the same month that he married
his wife, Arlene. He became a registered pharmacist and joined the U.S. Coast Guard.
He served in Memphis, where the Krumpelmans had two of their three children, and worked part-time in a pharmacy there. They returned to Northern Kentucky in 1969. Mr. Krumpelman found a job with the Elsmere Drug Store, and they found a house in Florence.
He stayed with the store, through several name changes, until 1999, when the store moved to Turfway Road. He worked there until cancer treatments forced him to quit last November.
Mr. Krumpelman didn't like to sit still. When he wasn't reading the latest prescription drug news, he worked with wood, making furniture and toys for the children.
His mind and heart were strong until the end, even when he was in so much pain he could only sit with his knees pulled to his chest.
"He was always the greatest guy, " his wife said. "He was the best husband to me for all these years, always faithful and great. I couldn't ask for anything more."
Mr. Krumpelman was a member of St. Paul Church in Florence and the Northern Kentucky Pharmacy Association.
