Anne Quinn O'Brien, 93, 'unshakable faith'

Anne Quinn O'Brien single-handedly stopped an electric company from constructing a tower on her Fort Mitchell farm.

First, she locked the gates and refused to let the bulldozers on her 80-acre property. Then, she took her case to court -- and won.

"She stuck to her guns, " daughter Tessie Suetholz said.

Mrs. O'Brien, 93, of Fort Mitchell, died at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday at her home.

The fight against the electric company was a demonstration of the strength the Irish Catholic mother of 13 possessed, Suetholz said.

Mrs. O'Brien's husband, Dr. John W. O'Brien, died in 1961 when Suetholz, the youngest child, was only 7. With her faith in God guiding her, Mrs. O'Brien raised her children, ran the farm and worked as a nurse.

"She was a woman who confronted every adversity with unshakable faith, " Suetholz said.

And while Mrs. O'Brien may have been strong, she was also gentle and kind, especially when she worked as a nurse.

"She loved nursing because, once again, mother was a very charismatic, caring person, " Suetholz said.

Mrs. O'Brien was a former director of nursing for the old Northern Kentucky Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Fort Wright.
