John H. Hoffman, Kroger manager
John H. Hoffman Jr. started working for the Kroger Co. when he was 17 years old. He retired in 1994 after 46 years with the company.
The Lakeside Park resident, who died Wednesday at 72, started as a produce clerk. He finished his career by managing the store in Fort Mitchell for about 12 years, said his widow, Marian Schneider Hoffman.
He worked at stores in Elsmere, Ludlow and on Seventh Street in Covington, where his future bride got to know him. They would have been married
50 years on May 1.
Mr. Hoffman left the Kroger Co. for about 18 months to serve in the Army during the Korean War. He stayed in Korea one year to the day, leaving the day the truce was signed.
The war also interrupted his studies at Xavier University. It took him about 12 years, but he graduated with a degree in accounting.
When he retired, Mr. Hoffman decided to take up woodcarving. He joined the Cincinnati Carver's Club and the River Valley Woodcarver's Club.
He was a member of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood for more than 40 years. He was also a member of the Golden Age Club of Edgewood, a senior citizens club, and American Legion Post No. 203, Latonia.
"He was wonderful, " his wife said. "He was always grateful for anything anyone did for him."
Other survivors include daughters, Joyce Mothershead of Lakeside Park, Carol Buchanan of Cincinnati, Teri Hensley of Taylor Mill, Linda Shelton and Jacqueline Hoffman, both of Fort Wright, and Marcia Fannin of Latonia; a son, J. Jude Hoffman of Edgewood; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Church. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Mildred E. Carr, 94, of Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Bromley, died at Orchard Ridge Nursing Center, Port Richey. She was a telephone operator with Cincinnati Bell and a founder of the former St. James School in Ludlow. She was a member of Ludlow Senior Citizens and West Covington Seniors Citizens Birthday Club. Her husband, Carlton Carr, died in 1973. A daughter, Anne Louise Kells, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Larry Carr of Union and Thomas Carr of Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.
Jack Taylor Fitzgerald, 78, of Ghent, died Wednesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a retired truck driver, a member of United Pentecostal Church of Carrollton and an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Robert Fitzgerald, and a daughter, Sondra Kay, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Violet Fitzgerald; daughters, Peggy Ann Hebner of Carrollton, Connie Sanders of Peach Tree, Ga., Cheryl Marie Craig of Park Lake, Patricia Carrol Fitzgerald of Carrollton and Melissa Kay Anderson of Ghent; a son, Rev. Tony Fitzgerald of Anaconda, Mont.; sisters, Pauline Hodgins and Nora Pusley, both of Carrollton; a brother, James Fitzgerald of Carrollton; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carrollton United Pentecostal Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Squiresville Cemetery, Owen County. Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.
Terri Lynn Herald, 47, of Highland Heights, died at 3:20 a.m. Thursday at her residence. She was a yearbook specialist with Life Touch Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Summit Church of Christ, Cold Spring.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Ray Herald; sons, B.J. Herald, Josh Herald and Brad Herald, all of Highland Heights; her parents, Clarence and Shirley Pritchard of Creasview; sisters, Amy Reed of Westerville, Ohio, Sandy Sorrell of Atlanta, and Tammy Meyers of Hebron; and a brother, Larry Pritchard of Rochester.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Summit Church of Christ, Cold Spring. Visistation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Betty Jane Kramling Koenig, 77, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired cashier with Highlands High School cafeteria, Fort Thomas, and a secretary of St. John United Church of Christ Sunday school.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Koenig; sons, David Koenig of Florence and Daniel Koenig of Maryland; a daughter, Cindy Ossege of Fort Thomas; a sister, Rosemary Chenue of Wilder; and five grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John United Church of Christ, Newport. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. George C. Laible, 85, of Fort Wright, died at 5:29 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. He was a retired electronics engineer and was a member of St. Benedict Church in Cincinnati, the Hill Toppers senior group, the Sixth Ward social club in Covington, and was a sergeant in the Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Willmes Laible; sons, Harry G. Laible, John R. Laible, and Tom F. Laible, all of Covington; daughters Kathy S. Trimpe of Crestview Hills, Dottie E. Wenz of Fort Mitchell, and Geogianne Kitch of Florence; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at St. Benedict Church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Visitation will run prior to the service from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Anne Convent, 1000 St. Anne Drive, Melbourne, Ky. 41059.
Donald Eugene Reid, 75, of Independence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington. He was a mechanic at Consolidated Freightways in Cincinnati, a member of the Scottish Rite and Masonic Lodge No. 746 F&AM.;
Survivors include wife Carol Reid; a son, Ronnie Reid of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Benita Kim Choy of Erlanger; a sister, Phyllis Cantrall of Covington; three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Community Pentecostal Church of God, Independence. Visitation will be 5 p.m.-8 p.m. today at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be at Floral Hills Memorial Garden, Taylor Mill.

Ambria Lynn Schultz, 21, of California, died Monday at a friend's home in Jackson Township, Ohio.

Bonita Ella Smith, 59, of Shelbyville, Del., formerly of Fort Thomas, died March 31 in Shelbyville. She was a registered nurse.
Survivors include a son, Richard K. Smith of Shelbyville; a daughter, Browne L. Smith of New York City; a sister, Ellen Smith of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.
