Ada Barkau, teacher, always served others
Ada Barkau believed life's purpose was to serve; it was an example she set in her own life.
Mrs. Barkau, 97, of Newport, who died Thursday at Baptist Village Care Center, grew up on a farm in Osgood, Ind., and earned a two-year teaching certificate at Indiana University, where she met the man she would marry, the Rev. Harold Barkau.
Her first teaching job was at a one-room school in rural Indiana.
She moved to Newport when her husband became pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ.
She hired on as the librarian at Newport Junior High, then taught fourth graders at Grandview Elementary.
In 1957, the Newport Ministerial Association asked her to be the teacher for the Weekday School of Religion, a church-based education program for Newport fifth- and sixth-graders.
"It was taught at the churches nearest to the schools, " said Mrs. Barkau's youngest daughter, Donna Hamilton of Crestview Hills.
"She was still doing it after my dad died in 1972. She didn't make much money, but she would carry her box of Bibles and hymn books, and the children would help her."
Years later, Hamilton said, people approached her mother to tell her they'd been in her class and how much it meant to them.
"One woman brought a bouquet of beautiful flowers to her door to thank her for the impact that class had on her when she was a girl, " Hamilton said.
"I hope she shows up at the visitation so I can tell her we still have those flowers."
After she stopped teaching, Mrs. Barkau filled her days driving elderly friends and acquaintances to doctor or dentist appointments, Hamilton said.
Mrs. Barkau was awarded the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award by the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1996.
