Robert Riggs Scott, provided scholarships
Robert Riggs Scott loved agriculture and education, so when he fell ill and had to sell the family farm, he set up scholarships with the proceeds.
His wife, Elmira, said he gave more than $1 million so graduates of Dixie Heights, Simon Kenton and Scott high schools and members of the Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, could go to college.
"He really believed in education, and he wanted to help any way he could, " she said.
Mr. Scott, 91, of Villa Hills, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Mr. Scott was the fifth generation of Scotts who owned the land that he farmed for 70 years. Even after he sold the farm, he continued to grow fruits and vegetables as a hobby and donated much of the crops to four churches in Crescent Springs.
"All of his life he has helped, " his wife said, adding that he often helped boys who worked on the farm pay for their college tuition.
His other passion, education, led him to serve on the Kenton County Board of Education from 1952 to 1976, acting as chairman from 1960 to 1976. Scott High School is named in his honor.
He also was a board member of the Kenton County Assessment Fire Insurance Co., the Tri-City Seniors Club and the Eutopia Agriculture Club.
