Mary Claire Boberg, teacher, Villa Madonna president, nun
Mary Claire Boberg was a Benedictine nun for more than 30 years before her conscience compelled her to leave.
It was a matter of principle for her, said her sister, Sister Joan Boberg of Covington. Mary Claire never really said why, but her sister suspects that it had something to do with her being a strong women's rights advocate.
Mary Claire, 72, who died Sunday at her home in Wilder, worked in Roman Catholic schools in Colorado and in Covington.
Then known as Sister Mary Karen, she taught at St. Anthony in Taylor Mill and also was president of the Villa Madonna Academy in Villa Hills.
She also served in Washington, D.C., as a member of Network, a national Catholic social justice lobbying group made up of nuns.
When she left the Benedictine sisters, she worked with the poor in Cincinnati's inner city. She also was executive director of the Fountain Square Fools, a Christian theater group.
She later taught at the Cincinnati Job Corps Center and then volunteered at the Hispanic Center in Covington, teaching math and GED preparation until about a year ago, when she became too sick with cancer to work.
When her parents died in 1980, she became the matriarch of the Boberg family, her sister said. She was the oldest of 13 children.
She was an avid card player, and one couldn't spend more than an hour at her home without being asked to play. She played poker with a group of women friends once a month.
"She was a fun person, " her sister said. "She loved living and was very involved with life in every aspect."
