Norma Leirey, zoo volunteer and world traveler

Norma Leirey loved volunteering at the Cincinnati Zoo.

"In conjunction with her volunteering with the zoo, she went on a number of trips overseas through the zoo, to Africa, to one of the game preserves over there, " said her son, Frank Leirey, of Lawrenceburg, Ind. "She got to go to the Great Wall of China, through the zoo.

"She got involved with it and just absolutely loved it, " her son said. "She originally started as one of the volunteers in the gift shop, prior to the zoo starting to contract it out a few years ago."

When she stopped working in the gift shop, she became a Zoo Ambassador, one of the guides who walk around the complex helping visitors.

"Last summer, she was the welcome person at the butterfly exhibit, " he son said.

Mrs. Leirey, 73, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

A few years ago, she discovered another passion -- the card game, euchre.

"She started up at the old Monte Casino civic club, " Frank Leirey said. "She was very big into that. She really looked forward to that on Fridays and Saturdays."

Her husband, George Leirey, died Dec. 4, 1987.

She worked at Federated Department Stores for about 20 years as a secretary before retiring. After that, she worked part-time and volunteered at the zoo, her son said.

Surviving in addition to her son are a brother, Charles Stillwell, of Nashville, Tenn; a grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mischler Funeral Home in Bremen, Ind., with burial to follow in Bremen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cincinnati Zoo, 3400 Vine St., Cincinnati, 45220.

Virginia "Ginny" Berkemeier, 72, of Dayton, died Thursday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Earl Berkemeier, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Anthony Berkemeier of Bellevue, Michael S. Berkemeier and Terry Berkemeier, both of Dayton; daughters, Janet Sizemore and Brenda Smitty, both of Newport; a brother, James Peterson of Dayton; a sister, Lillian Clos of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Velma B. Green, 77, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington.

She was a retired insurance rater from Royal Globe Insurance, Cincinnati, and a member of First Church of God, Latonia.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Green; a daughter, Paula New of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth North Hospice, 401 E. 20th Street, Covington, Ky. 41014.

Mary Barbara Burroughs Hanneken, 77, of Villa Hills, died April 16at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington.

She was a retired teacher and a registered nurse at Jewish Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital South, Edgewood. She was a member of Mother of God Church, Covington, and of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

A son, Michael Hanneken, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Lehman of Independence, Maureen Lusby of Taylor Mill, and Karen Thoss of Walton; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon May 1 at Mother of God Church, Covington. She will be cremated. Memorials are suggested to Notre Dame Academy, 1699 Hilton Drive, Park Hills, Ky. 41011; or to the Northern Kentucky University School of Nursing and Health Professions, Nunn Drive, AHC 303, Highland Heights, Ky. 41099.

Earleen Haynes, 55, of Independence, died Thursday at her residence. She was a manager for Huntington Bank. Her husband, Donald "Pete" Haynes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Michelle D. Bennett and Deana M. Fultz, both of Independence; parents, Earl and Illa Ferry of Covington; two brothers, four sisters and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to The Smile Train, 245 Fifth Ave., Suite 2201, New York, N.Y. 10016. Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.

Roy B. Haynes, 90, of Independence, died Friday at his residence. He was a conductor retired from the L&N; Railroad and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence. A son, Donald Eugene "Pete" Haynes, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Pearl Baker Haynes; sons, David L. Haynes of Aurora, Ind. and Gary Dennis Haynes of Burlington; daughters, Linda Darlene Haynes of Florence and Vicky Smock of Dry Ridge; brothers, Charles Haynes of Lexington and Frank Haynes of Greenwood, Ind.; a sister, Mary C. Kyle of Somerset; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to National Stroke Association, 9707 E. Easter Lane, Englewood, Colo. 80112.

Paul Joseph Hilgeford, 87, of Covington, died April 17 at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

He was a retired printer.

Survivors include sons, David Hilgeford of Villa Hills, Mark Hilgeford of Edgewood, and Dr. Eric Hilgeford of Louisville; a daughter, Lois Angelucci of Lexington; sisters, Dorothy Malinowski and Helen Virmond, both of Chicago; and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Walnut Hills. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Covington, Ky. 41011. Linneman Funeral Home, Covington, was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph "J.P." Lyons, 55, of Covington, died Friday at Miami Haven Nursing Home, Cincinnati.

He was an employee at Lehman Manufacturing and Westerman Printing, both in Cincinnati, and a former sports writer for the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington.

Survivors include brothers, Michael S. Lyons of Covington, and Christopher J. Lyons of Latonia.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Covington Catholic High School, 1600 Dixie Highway, Park Hills, Ky. 41011. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Arlene M. Perle, 63, of Ryland Heights, died Friday at her residence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Daniel Perle, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Fields of Carlisle, Ind.; daughters, Christine Smith of Cincinnati, Loretta Hopper of Ryland Heights, and Sandra Thornton of Pikeville, N.C.; four brothers, three sisters, eight grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Monday. She will be cremated.

Vivian Setters, 71, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospital South, Edgewood. She was a secretary at Moesehl-Edwards Door Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, David Woods of Walton, and several nephews and nieces.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Apostolic Lighthouse Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, Corbin. Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Richard D. Spangler, 70, of Wilder, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a driver retired from First Transit Co., Boone County, and a member of Full Gospel Assembly of God Church, Newport. A son, Victor Wade Spangler, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Spangler of Wilder; a son, Donnie Spangler of Wilder; brothers, Charles Spangler of Berea and Bill Spangler of Sevierville, Tenn.; and sisters, Betty Bowman of Independence, Bertha Robertson and Linda Weigands, both of Edgewood.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Full Gospel Assembly of God Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Full Gospel Assembly of God Church, 1305 John Street, Newport, Ky. 41071.

Colleen Swanson, 39, of Covington, died Thursday at her parents' residence in Falmouth. She was a clerk at Hill Seed Co., Covington, and Pilot Hardware Do-It Center, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include her husband, Geoffrey W. Swanson; parents Bill and Peggy Sparks Strange; a brother, Jerry Strange of Crittenden; and sisters, Peggy Davitt of Newport and Kelly Griffith of Falmouth.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Richard E. Swope, 73, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Dayton, died Thursday at his residence.

He was a supervisor at GTE and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Incarnation Church and Knights of Columbus No. 3358, both in Sarasota, and American Legion Post No. 11, Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen L. Swope; a son, Darrell R. Swope of Winder, Ga.; daughters, Darlene E. Weinzierl of Venice, Fla. and Melanie A. Wilson of Sarasota; a sister, Orell R. Hollowell of Fort Thomas; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Incarnation Church, Sarasota. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Packer Funeral Home, Sarasota. Burial will be at Incarnation Church Garden. Memorials are suggested to Juvenile Diabetes, 3333 Clark Road, Suite 160, Sarasota, Fla. 34231.

Richard Theodore Tieke, 74, of Louisville, died Thursday at his residence.

He was an avionics lead retired from USAir and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of St. Gabriel Church, Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, Ann H. Tieke; sons, Richard T. Tieke, Jr., of Cincinnati, Robert W. Tieke and David M. Tieke, both of Louisville; daughters, Rose M. Tieke of Hebron, Patricia A. Collins of Burlington, and Joan C. Sears of Union; brothers, Norbert Tieke and William Tieke, both of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary Foster of Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
