Sherry Westendorf, always helping people

Sherry Westendorf always went all out at Christmas, decorating the house, making brunch and dinner and coming up with thoughtful gifts for her family and friends.

Christmas memories are ones that her daughter, Susan Westendorf, will never forget.

"She just put her heart into everything, " said Susan Westendorf, of Crescent Springs.

Mrs. Westendorf, 58, of Villa Hills, died Tuesday at her home.

She was the ultimate stay-at-home mom, her daughter said.

She cooked gourmet meals, sewed curtains and clothing and did anything else she could to make her family comfortable.

"She was always doing things for other people, family and friends, " Susan Westendorf said.

But when her two children grew up, Mrs. Westendorf went to college for herself, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology. She then worked for 11 years as a counselor for Tri-Health and the Health Alliance in Cincinnati.

Her hobbies included swimming in her backyard pool with her children and grandson, Grant Westendorf, and traveling to San Francisco and Europe with her husband.

Surviving in addition to her daughter are her husband, John P. Westendorf; a son, John P. Westendorf Jr. of Owensboro; her mother, Margaret Brill Steinmetz of Independence; a brother, Marshall Steinmetz of Edgewood; sisters, Leisa Yanke of Covington and Kathy Herzog and Debbie Steinmetz, both of Florence; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Mrs. Westendorf donated her body to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Memorials are suggested to the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, 1685 Branham Lane, Suite 227, San Jose, Calif. 95118; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Program, 401 E. 20th Street, Covington, Ky. 41014.

Rubye Arnold, 86, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. She was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include many cousins.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Eugene Joseph Bessler, 50, of Florence, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a plant manager at Boone Ready Mix Concrete Co., Boone County.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Gene and Joyce Bessler of Crestview Hills; brothers, Vince Bessler of Hebron and Mike Bessler of Walton; sisters, Barbara Gebauer of DeForest, Wis., Ann Pratt of Worthington, Ohio, and Julie Trenkamp of Burlington; stepbrothers, Ted Seiter, Terry Seiter, Tim Seiter and Tom Seiter, all of Florence; and a step-sister, Andrea Seiter of Florence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent dePaul, 2655 Crescent Springs Road, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017; or American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Isaac C. Deaton, 81, of Latonia, died Tuesday at his residence.

He was retired from Interlake Steel, Newport, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Latonia Baptist Church.

His wife, Mabel Marie Deaton, preceded him in death.

Survivors include stepdaughters, Marsha Knapp and Linda Innis, both of Dayton; a brother, David Deaton of Walton; a sister, Mary Ruth Foster of Taylor Mill; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Full Gospel Assembly of God, 1305 John St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Nora B. Doyle, 74, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington. She was a retired factory worker from Kenner Products. Her son, Ray Marcum, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Sandy Dawn of Covington and Mary Esterer of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Robert Chapman of Bonham, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No services are scheduled. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Hazel Fay Glantz, 86, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Edward Glantz, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Warren Pierson of Covington; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Louise Harris, 78, of Highland Heights, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Jane Jump Huntsman, 82, of Independence, died Monday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Woodrow "Woody" Huntsman; daughters, Linda Morris of Covington, Sharon Williams and Helen Breeze, both of Independence; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is handling arrangements.

Sarah King, 96, of Newport, died Monday at Meadows Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include a sister, Fannie Anderson of Corbin, and two grandchildren.

Services were Wednesday. Burial was in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, handled arrangements.

Charles Gabriel Kunkel, 22 months, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Survivors include his parents, Phillip Charles and Maria Kunkel; maternal grandparents, Joe and Elizabeth Grenke of Mancelona, Mich.; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary Ruth Kunkel of Union; maternal great-grandmother, Carolyn McQuire of Fayetteville, N.C.; and brothers, Dominic Kunkel, Luke Kunkel, Nicholas Kunkel and Phillip Kunkel, all of Crittenden.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Covington.

Gertrude Lee Williams Martin, 78, of Taylor Mill, died Tuesday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was retired from Potter's Shoe Store, Cincinnati and Florence, and Sunny Acres Day Care Center, Latonia. She was a member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, Latonia. Her husband, Dudley Martin, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Dudley Martin Jr. of Edgewood; daughters, Rebecca Humphreys of Alexandria, Sandra Lovell of Carefree, Ariz., Victoria Casson and Gertrude Bauer, both of Taylor Mill; sisters, Audrey Hudgins of Worthville and Charlotte Angel of Norfolk, Va.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association, Greater Cincinnati Chapter, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Charles Edgar Underdown, 85, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a self-employed carpenter and a member of Newport Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Underdown; sons, Daniel Underdown of Independence and Ray Underdown of Cincinnati; a daughter, Evelyn Osborne of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Newport Church of God. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
