George Breitenbecher, 62, community-minded
George Breitenbecher was a community-minded man who went to war for his country.
He served in the Army in peacetime shortly after graduating from high school. At the start of the Vietnam War, he joined the Navy and became a commissioned officer, said his wife, Kathy.
"Serving his country was important to him, " she said.
Mr. Breitenbecher, 62, of Union died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired internal security worker for the IRS, a member of the American Legion and a community volunteer.
Mr. Breitenbecher was an avid reader who volunteered as a high school reading tutor and also was a volunteer teacher of English as a second language, his wife said.
"He figured to get ahead in the world, you needed a good education, " his wife said. "Education was everything."
Mrs. Breitenbecher described her husband as a giving person.
"He helped a lot of people. He'd mow grass for some older women for free to help them, " she said. "He was the most honest generous, kind person you want to meet. Never had a bad word for anybody."
Survivors in addition to his wife include a sister, Jean Knight of Maineville, Ohio.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights.
Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Saturday. Cremation will be at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home and Crematory, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
Minervia Cowart, 72, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital North, Covington. She was a retired assembler from the Overhead Door Co.
Survivors include sons, Earnest J. Cowart of Florence and Sylvester Burton of Covington; a sister, Ruby B. Carter of Covington; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon today at United Community Christian Center, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. today. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Jones, Simpson & Gee Funeral Home, Covington, is handling the arrangements.
June Marguerite Draper Damron, 73, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired housekeeper from the former Gateway, Covington, and a member of Latonia Christian Church. Her husband, Gary Lee Damron, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Michael Anderson of Covington; daughters, Margie Ross of Latonia and Debbie Murphy of Covington; five grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.
Evelyn Edwards Dettor, 86, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Mary H. Miller Humble, 90, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker, a member of the Piqua Christian Church, Mount Olivet, and a member of the Piqua Homemakers. Her husband, Emmitt Linville Humble, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Beverly Culp of Cincinnati and Bonnie Schulze of Bradenton, Fla., and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Piqua Christian Church, Route 165, Mount Olivet, Ky. 41064.
Dorothy Roseberry Montgomery Jackson, 77, of Grants Lick, died Wednesday at her residence. She was a member of Fairlane Baptist Church, Grants Lick, and the Happy 100 Club. Her first husband, Melvin Montgomery, preceded her in death in 1985. Her second husband, Joe Jackson, preceded her in death in 2002.
Survivors include sons, James Montgomery and David Montgomery, both of Falmouth, Richard Montgomery of Grants Lick, and Marvin Montgomery of Butler; daughters, Carolyn Miller of Alexandria, Sandra "Sandy" Milton of Grants Lick, and Theresa "Terry" Hollingshead of Falmouth; brothers, Elmer Roseberry of Butler and Alan Roseberry of Independence; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairlane Baptist Church, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
Charles Eddie Johnson, 64, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired truck driver from CTS, Lexington, and a member of Sherman Baptist Church, Dry Ridge. His wife, Cora Johnson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Don Johnson of Williamstown and Randy Johnson of Crittenden; a daughter, Patty Kinman of Dry Ridge; a brother, Bill Johnson of Erlanger; sisters, Mary Strampfer of Dayton, Ohio, and Elvena Ayers of Mason, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Graves County. William "Bill" Thomas Judy, Sr., 96, of Frankfort, died Wednesday at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was retired from Kentucky state government. He was a member of Highland Christian Church, Frankfort, and the East Frankfort Kiwanis Club. His wife, Veronica Ficke Judy, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, William Thomas Judy, Jr., of Washington, D.C., John Ronald Judy of Cynthiana, James Donald Judy and Michael Lee Judy, both of Frankfort, and Jay Stephan Judy of Lexington; a brother, Norman P. Judy of Millersburg; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Rogers Funeral Home, Frankfort. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery.
Jerry C. Lepper, Jr., 33, of Indialantic, Fla., died Monday at Wueshoff Memorial Hospital, Rockledge, Fla. He was a maintenance worker with BMP Pool Service, Indialantic, Fla.
Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Mary Bradford Lepper of Fort Thomas; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at A.C. Dobbling & Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Sunday. He will be cremated. Memorials are suggested to Northern Kentucky University Scholarship Fund, Nunn Drive, Highland Heights, Ky. 41099.
Lois C. Quindel, 56, of Elgin, Ill., died Tuesday at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was a lab technician at Sherman Hospital, Elgin, and a member of Evangelical Covenant Church, Elgin.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Quindel; a son, Mark Bray of Belvidere, Ill.; her mother, Marjorie McNees of Falmouth; brothers, Steve McNees of Elgin and Rick McNees of Hampshire, Ill.; and a sister, Connie Peed of Falmouth.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin.
Sherry Westendorf, 58, of Villa Hills, died Tuesday at her residence. She had a bachelor's degree from Northern Kentucky University and a master's from Xavier University, both in counseling. She was a former counselor for Tri-Health and for the Health Alliance, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, John P. Westendorf; a son, John P. Westendorf Jr. of Owensboro; a daughter, Susan Westendorf of Crescent Springs; her mother, Margaret Brill Steinmetz of Independence; a brother, Marshall Steinmetz of Edgewood; sisters, Leisa Yanke of Covington, Kathy Herzog and Debbie Steinmetz, both of Florence; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. She donated her body to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Florence Zorens, 93, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a self-employed bookkeeper.
