James Fangman, coach and father figure for many

Jim Fangman was everybody's coach and father figure.

Whether he was coaching other people's kids in baseball and basketball at St. Agnes Church in Park Hills, Pee Wee football in Boone County or just showing up with his plumber's tools to help fix something around the house for his own kids, "he was always around for us, " said his son, Rob Fangman, of Edgewood.

James E. Fangman, 66, of Fort Wright, died Thursday at University Hospital, Cincinnati from complications of a brain aneurysm.

A plumber and pipefitter for 35 years, he was a business agent with Plumbers & Pipefitters Union No. 397 and a member of St. Agnes Church, Park Hills. He was also a member of the St. Agnes and Covington Catholic Booster Association, St. Agnes Holy Name Society, Devou Seniors' Gulf League, and the K of C Golf League.

He was a coach for boys baseball and boys and girls basketball at St. Agnes Church in Ft. Wright; Boone County Pee Wee Football; Campbell County Red Devils and Ft. Thomas Pee Wee Football.

It was his unique characteristic of always being positive that made people like to be around Jim Fangman, his son Rob said. "Even if you didn't know him, it made him seem as if you'd known him for years."

The Covington Catholic student body, for which he was such a dedicated booster, dedicated their Thursday track meet to him in his honor. The team came in first.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years Mary Wartman Fangman; sons, Alex Fangman, Eric Fangman, and Chris Fangman, all of Fort Wright; Greg Fangman of Cold Spring, and Robert Fangman of Edgewood; a daughter, Katie Fangman of Fort Wright; brothers, Leonard "Skip" Fangman of Park Hills and Donald Fangman of Fort Thomas; a sister, Jane Fangman of Fort Wright; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Agnes Church, Park Hills. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Memorials are suggested to James Fangman Children's Educational Fund, 1593 St. Anthony Circle, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011.

Harold F. Aker, 78, of Covington, died Friday at Villa Springs Care Center, Erlanger. He was a retired roofer from Aker Contractors. His wife, Cora Aker, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, John Aker of Covington; daughters, Margaret Aker of Florence, Charliene Feldmeyer of Clarksville, Ohio, and Patricha Byrd of Warren Robbins, Ga.; a sister, Hillie Forster of Pineville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

David Allen Buemi Sr., 40, of Newport, died Thursday at his residence. He worked for Can-Do Recycling, Covington.

Survivors include sons, David Allen Buemi Jr., and Jacob Buemi, both of Cincinnati; a daughter, Miranda Buemi of Cincinnati; brothers, Mike Buemi of Cincinnati, Ted Buemi of Florence, and Tim Buemi of Covington; and a sister, Diana Hoppius of Covington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Calvin Edward Campbell, 53, of Carrollton, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a meat cutter for Parkview IGA, Carrollton, and a volunteer fireman for the Campbellsburg Fire Department. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Carrollton Moose Lodge, and Sons of American Legion, Madison Ind.

Survivors include his former wife and caregiver, Kathy Lee Campbell; a son, James Edward Campbell of Carrollton; a daughter, Rebecca Ellen Campbell of Carrollton; his mother, Janet L. Campbell of Carrollton; brothers, Jerry Lee Campbell of Carrollton and Allen Hughes Campbell of Winchester, Tenn.; sisters, Clara Fields and Doris Price, both of Carrollton, Mary LaVerne and Lucy Ellen Williams, both of Shelbyville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in English Cemetery, Carroll County.

Robert "Speed" Coleman, 83, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington. He was a retired yard foreman for the L&N; Railroad and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Latonia Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Emma D. Sizemore Coleman; a son, Robert Michael Coleman of Independence; a sister, Catherine Caudill of Leesburg, N.C.; a stepsister, Evelyn Stamper of Pike County; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Latonia Christian Church, 3900 Decoursey Avenue, Latonia, Ky. 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Edward M. Deck, 81, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospital South, Edgewood. He was a retired maintenance worker for Seagram's Distillery. His wife, Marilyn Campbell Deck, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a sister, Frances D. Long of Cincinnati, two nephews, and three nieces.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bullittsburg Baptist Cemetery, Burlington. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Bullittsburg Baptist Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, is handling arrangements.

Evelyn H. Dettor, 86, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church, Covington. She was also a member of Rosebud Chapter No. 39, Order of the Eastern Star; Covington Shrine No. 10, White Shrine of Jerusalem; Queen Esther Court No. 21, Order of the Amarrath; Young at Heart Seniors Club; Golden Rule Lodge Ladies' Auxiliary; District Three Hospital Circle; and Baker-Hunt Foundation's Six Twenty Women's Club. Her husband, William H. Dettor Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, William H. Dettor Jr., of Florence; a daughter, Joyce Dettor Baker of Covington; a sister, Bernice Scofield of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at First United Methodist Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, and at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Eastern Star Home of Kentucky, 923 Eastern Star Court, Louisville, Ky. 40204; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Program, 401 E. 20th Street, Covington, Ky. 41017.

Shirley J. Hawkins, 81, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington. She was a retired beautician. Her husband, William D. Hawkins, and her daughter, Judy Hawkins Robinson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Denny Hawkins of Union; sisters, Vivian Lutes of Crestview Hills, Eunice Fisk of Cincinnati, Andrea Wilson of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Jane Cook of Elizabeth City, N.C.; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Program, 401 East 20th Street, Covington, Ky. 41014; or Trinity Parkinson's Wellness Center, c/o University of Cincinnati, P.O. Roberta V. Kaylor, 89, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired clerk from First National Bank, Cincinnati, and a member of Dry Ridge Christian Church. Her husband, Carl Kaylor, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Sadie M. Brumback of Fort Thomas; a stepson, Steven Kaylor of London; and several nephews and nieces.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.

Lelon Edward Lucey, Sr., 74, of DeMossville, died Thursday at his residence. He was a retired machinist for Metalcraft Corp., Edgewood, and a member of Masonic Bradford Lodge No. 123 and Teamster Local No. 100. His wife, Rose Lucey, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Lelon Edward Lucey, Jr., of DeMossville; daughters, Rose Anna Canafax of Williamstown, Suzanne Lucey Loman of DeMossville, and Gladys Fulton of Harrison County; and 10 grandchildren.

No services are scheduled. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Hailey Cheyenne Means, four months, of Elsmere, died Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. Her maternal grandfather, Adam Jordan, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her father, Ryan Means; her mother, Sabrina Jordan; maternal grandmother, Amber Smith of Warsaw; paternal grandfather, Robert Means of Orlando, Fla., paternal grandmother, Sandra Whitacre of Indiana; and a sister, Crystal Means of Covington.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Floral Hills cemetery Chapel, Taylor Mill. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. J. Charles Plummer, 81, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired salesman from Hilltop Concrete Co., Cincinnati, and an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His wife, Eleanor Lee Cook Plummer, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa A. Barnhart of Columbus, Ohio, and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 2690 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017.

Dennis Ray Retherford, 58, of Florence, died Friday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati He was a truck driver with Drysdale Trucking Co., and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was also a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 88.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Retherford; a son, Christopher Retherford of Florence; and brothers, Eddie Retherford of Newburg, Ind., and Glenn Richard Retherford of Aurora, Ind.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Kidney Foundation of Kentucky, 250 E. Liberty Street, Suite 710, Louisville, Ky. 40202.

Harold Straub, 53, of Falmouth, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Rev. Clyde Thomas Sullivan, 84, of Nixa, Mo., died Thursday.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Mary F. Sageser Whitaker, 66, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Hospice Care Center, Lexington. She was a homemaker and a member of Benson United Methodist Church, Cynthiana. Her husband, Logan Sageser, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Vance of Cynthiana; a brother, Melvin Williams of Bourbon County; sisters, Sudie King of Pendleton County, Louise True and Janette Hunt, both of Bourbon County, Goldie Jett of Camargo, Nancy Wilson and Etta Faye Schwanke, both of Cynthiana; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Ky. 40504.
