G. Gordon Hue, 84, Cork 'N Bottle founder
G. Gordon Hue was a man who had a constant eye on the future, a visionary always trying to discern the next wave or trend.
Mr. Hue, 84, of Lakeside Park, who died Saturday at his home, successfully operated the Goodtimers Caf in Latonia during the 1940s and '50s. But early in the 1960s he perceived that the business had passed its prime, so he began looking for a new venture.
He concocted a new kind of liquor store, one in which customers would make their own selections and that would offer a line of fine imported table wines. In 1964 he launched it in Covington, naming it the Cork 'N Bottle.
"There was nothing else around here like it at the time, " said a daughter, Nadine Hellings of Lakeside Park. "It was revolutionary."
Mr. Hue built the business into one of the largest liquor retailers in Kentucky. He was constantly looking for ways to keep it ahead of its competition, so over the years added cheeses and other gourmet food. Illness -- he suffered from emphysema -- reduced his role at the store in recent years, but he still kept in touch by phone with two sons who took over the business.
"The day before he died he was talking on the phone with people at the store, " said son, Brian Hue of Montgomery, Ohio.
While Mr. Hellings always had an eye to the future, he never forgot his past. He was appreciative of the opportunity he had to attend Xavier University during the tail end of the Great Depression and never passed an opportunity to help his alma mater later in life.
He gave money to the school himself, organized many fund-raisers, including annual golf tournaments, and was believed to be the Musketeer basketball team's longest-running season ticket holder.
"I can remember being carried into Schmidt Field House in the 1950s as a young child, " said Hellings.
In the midst of his final illness in March, he rallied briefly during Xavier's unprecedented run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
"He gave back to the Jesuits any chance he had, " Hellings said. "He was very appreciative of the opportunity they gave him for an education."
His giving to the Jesuits will continue after his death. He asked that memorials in his name go to Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45207, or St. Xavier High School, 600 North Bend Road, Finneytown, Ohio, 45224.
