Katherine 'Kate' Bilbo, 21, writer and artist

Katherine "Kate" Bilbo was a young writer who specialized in poetry and short stories about personal experiences and a talented artist who concentrated on drawing human figures.

"Every piece of her writing and art was very personal, " said Ms. Bilbo's mother, Rebecca Bilbo of Fort Mitchell. "Everything sprang from within herself."

Ms. Bilbo, 21, of Fort Mitchell, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington after a long illness.

A graduate of Beechwood High School, she was a student at Thomas More College studying creative writing and art.

She was the art editor of the college art and literary journal, Words.

Ms. Bilbo also played tennis for the Beechwood and Thomas More teams.

"She was a unique person, " said her mother. "Many of her viewpoints concerned things that a lot of other people hadn't thought about before.

"She loved to find connections between things that aren't seemingly related to each other. She would be able to draw those connections."

Just as Ms. Bilbo's poetry and short stories were based on personal experiences, her art work reflected personal themes.

"She drew human figures, " said her mother. "She would say, 'This is what it's all about -- humans. It's not about leaves and trees and nature. It's about people.'"
