Maureen Dodd, early transplant recipient
Maureen Elizabeth "Liz" Dodd, 57, of Park Hills, was one of the first people in the country to receive a kidney transplant and one of the oldest transplant survivors.
Miss Dodd, who died Sunday at Hospice of Cincinnati, was diagnosed with renal failure when she was 17.
Seven years later, on Aug. 11, 1971, she received a kidney from her mother, Anita Keller Dodd of Villa Hills, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. Hers was the 31st transplant in the country.
When the transplant failed 10 years later, none of her family members qualified as donors, said her sister, Anita Connelly of Park Hills. Miss Dodd required hemodialysis treatments three times a week from then on.
"We hoped she would get one from a bank, but one never turned up, " Connelly said.
In spite of her illness, Miss Dodd enjoyed a full life. She earned a bachelor's degree in history from Northern Kentucky University, and she worked for more than 24 years for the federal government, first with the IRS and then with the EPA in Clifton.
"We thought she was real brave, " her sister said.
She loved her job and co-workers, her sister said, and they loved her back. They had a party for her one day because she was such an inspiration to them, her sister said.
Many of them visited her as she was dying. "It was wonderful, " her sister said. "They gave her a nice, happy end."
When Miss Dodd wasn't working, she enjoyed shopping with friends for clothes and linens at the Florence Mall, Dillard's or SteinMart. She also enjoyed classic rock 'n' roll music.
Her family said that she gave generously to many charities, including Women Helping Women, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the League of Animal Welfare and the Tekawitha Indian Mission.
Beside her mother and sister, survivors include two more sisters, Mary Kay Schmeing of Edgewood and Jeanne Dodd-Streadwick of Sanford, Mich.; and a brother, William J. Dodd of Columbus, Ohio.
