George Edmondson, educator, WWII vet
George Henry Edmondson told himself he would spend his life helping others if he made it home alive from Europe and his service with the Army's 3rd Armored Division during World War II.
He did just that, said his son, Gary Edmondson.
Mr. Edmondson came home from Europe and became a prominent educator in the Kenton County public school system from 1947 until he retired in 1978. He was a former principal of Park Hills Elementary and Simon Kenton High schools, and a former curriculum director for Kenton County Schools.
"I would say he was a very generous man, " said Gary Edmonson, of Bellaire, Texas. "Always looking out for everybody else."
Mr. Edmondson, 78, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He had wanted to visit the recently opened World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., but he was not able to do so. His son said he was going to take his father there this spring.
"I'm sure that was a disappointment to him, " he said.
But Mr. Edmondson was satisfied that he was at the dedication of a memorial to the 3rd Armored Division at Valley Forge in 2001.
"That was almost as important to him as the big one, " he said.
Long after his tour of Europe ended, the 3rd Armored Division was important to Mr. Edmondson. He was an active member of the 3rd Armored Division Association, serving as honorary president and host of its 56th reunion in 2003 in Northern Kentucky.
Also important to Mr. Edmondson were his grandchildren and great-grandchild and membership in the Latonia Baptist Church, where he was deacon and Sunday school teacher.
