Lawrence Strassburger, WWII vet, consultant
Lawrence Leo Louis Strassburger had plans to visit the World War II memorial in Washington with a group of 800 Kentucky veterans earlier this year.
The 370th Medical Division veteran and Edgewood resident was anxious to see the memorial, for which he had advocated for years.
Before the trip, however, he had scheduled an operation to fix the aftermath of a ruptured appendix he suffered in November. He expected to heal before his trip, but one complication led to another until his death on Monday, at age 79.
Although it clearly affected him deeply, Mr. Strassburger never said much about his war experience, said his daughter, Paula Rust of Covington.
He preferred to share his knowledge of electrical contracting and the electrical business. He worked as an electrical consultant for Bertke Electric Co. for 40 years, and then helped Quinn Electric Co. get into the business.
Mr. Strassburger loved boating. He indulged his love of the open air and water in a motorboat that he piloted on the Ohio River.
He also loved horses, and had some of his own when the family owned a farm in Union. He served as "right-hand stable boy" for his daughter, Rust said.
"If you could have hand-picked a father, you couldn't have picked a better one, that's for sure, " she said. "He loved being with young people."
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Strassburger was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Houston, in 2001; his first wife, the former Kathleen Hill, who died 22 years ago; and his second wife, the former Virginia Butler, in 1996.
