Evelyn Sparks, devoted wife, mother taught Sunday school
Evelyn Pope Sparks was the kind of mother that one doesn't often see anymore, the kind who kissed her husband goodbye in the morning and was waiting in the kitchen when he came home in the evening.
"She put my socks on me in the morning, made sure I had my toast and my juice and that I got to school on time, " said her son, Tom Pope of Liberty Township.
Mrs. Sparks, who died Sunday at age 84, was "your best friend, and she was an excellent listener, " her son said.
She was married
to her husband, the late James F. Sparks, for nearly 56 years, until his death in March 1998. They met when he sneaked into a church roller-skating party she was attending in Fort Thomas.
She fell down, and he helped her up and skated with her.
They dated for a while, and then Mr. Sparks, who was a Ranger in the 17th Airborne Division, was sent out for maneuvers. She sent him a penny postcard with her telephone number on it to prompt him to call her when he returned.
"She said she got him for a penny, " her son said.
Mrs. Sparks worked various jobs when her husband, who worked at General Electric, was off work because of strikes. Her last job was as an emergency-room receptionist at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
When the strike ended, her husband wanted her to quit the job, but she decided she liked it and kept it for 10 years. Her working in a hospital amused her children, because, whenever they got hurt, she would run the other way, her son said.
"She was a lot stronger than we thought, " he said.
The family lived in Butler on a 110-acre farm until the early 1960s, when the family home burned. The family then moved to Fort Thomas.
In later years, the Sparkses lived in a retirement home they built on 40 acres in California, Ky., where they had a lake stocked with fish. Mrs. Sparks spent her final days at the River Valley Nursing Home in Butler.
