Michael Carroll Jr., proud of his work for labor union
Michael A. Carroll Jr. believed so much in labor unions during his life that he wanted everybody to know it after his death.
"He told me to put on his tombstone, 'Michael A. Carroll Jr., a union man, '" said Mr. Carroll's wife, Patsy Carroll. "And that's the way it will be."
Mr. Carroll, 83, of Dayton, died Monday at his home.
He was a retired employee of Ford Motor Co., where he was a representative of United Auto Workers No. 863.
Mr. Carroll was a member of St. Bernard Church in Dayton, where he was a lay minister and a member of Christian Life Community, a prayer and Bible study group.
He did volunteer work at the St. Elizabeth South Hospital day care center, called Toddler Inn, and was a "Toddler Inn Rocker" who rocked babies in their cribs.
Mr. Carroll was a staunch supporter of the Democratic party.
"Michael's faith, union and Democratic politics were extremely important to him, " said Mrs. Carroll.
Mr. Carroll's hobby was making wooden picture frames.
"He had a fantastic memory, " said Mrs. Carroll. "He could stand up and recite pages and pages of poetry he had memorized.
"He knew President Kennedy's inaugural address word for word."
Mr. Carroll was an Army veteran and a Kentucky colonel.
A son, Michael Carroll, died in 1995. Daughters, Lori Carroll and Margaret Gibson, died in 1962 and 1983, respectively.
Survivors include a son, Timothy Carroll of Cincinnati; a stepson, Joe Brockmeyer of Dayton; daughters, Ruth Inderhees of Cincinnati and Patricia Ward of Dayton, Ohio; stepdaughters, Roxanne Craig of Highland Heights, Kimberly Fitch of Dayton, Tama Jane Reckers of Wilder, Julianne Trutschel of Southgate and Kelley Ann Brown of Ashland City, Ind.; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard Church, 401 Berry St., Dayton, Ky. 41074.
Dorothy Beebe, 83, of Fort Wright, died at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired secretary with AT&T;, Cincinnati, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. Her husband, Ed Beebe, died in 1995.
Survivors include a son, john Michael Beebe of Covington; daughters, Carol Holtman of Maple Heights, Ohio, and Susan Metzger of Barcelona, Spain; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Hope Bible Mission-Spain, P.O. Box 161, Morristown, N.J. 07963.
Clyde "Jerry" Bond, 81, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at his home. He was an artist and an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Thomas Bond, died in 2000.
Survivors include a sister, Alma Taylor of Fort Thomas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to First Church of the Nazarene, 830 York St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
Harriett Lee Petro Brennan, 86, of Owenton, died Monday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. She was a homemaker and a retired employee of Formica Corp., and a member of St. Michael Church in Cincinnati. Her husband, Arthur W. Brennan, and a son, Larry O'Banion, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Darlyn Waldrop of Owenton; a stepdaughter, Geri Clark of Cincinnati; a sister, Netty Newkirk of Brownsburg, Ind.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at McDonald & New Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Ollie Champ, 82, of Covington, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Ruth Lee Stephens Helmer, 78, of Fort Wright, died at 8:59 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was co-founder of Helming Plumbing Co. Her husband, Paul Joseph Helmer, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Steve Helmer and John Helmer, both of Union; daughters, Terri Woodside of Fort Mitchell, Jo Ann Kramer of Villa Hills and Jeanette Schwartz of San Francisco; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 6 p.m. Friday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Doris Lamb Pelley, 89, of Taylor Mill, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired sales clerk with H&S; Pogue Co., Cincinnati, and a member of First Christian Church, Covington. Her husband, Arnold Roy Pelley, died in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Pelley Belmont of Taylor Mill; a sister, Juanita Goldsberry of Latonia; a brother, George Lamb of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Paulie Baird Perkins, 78, of Independence, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired employee of the Kentucky Highway Department and a member of Independence Christian Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the National Guard. His wife, Mary Catherine Coy Perkins, died in 2002.
Survivors include daughters, Loretta Smith of Walton, Peggy Forman of Petersburg, Carol Faye Carson of Covington, Catherine Lynn Black of Petersburg and Patricia Sue Babin of Bellevue; sons, Bobby Gayle Perkins of Independence and Paul G. Perkins of Florence; a sister, Virginia Coy of Cynthiana; brothers, Donnie Perkins of Cynthiana, David Perkins of Taylor Mill and Darrell Perkins of Sadieville; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Lillian Edna Smith, 96, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Latonia Christian Church. Her husband, Zack Monroe Smith, died in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Schulz of Fort Wright; a son, William Smith of Florence; a brother, Harold Smith of Keavy; a sister, Stella Piper of Murray; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Eleanor McLane Gentrup Timmer, 91, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Newport. Her first husband, Fritz Gentrup, died in 1965. Her second husband, Joseph Timmer, died in 1988. A daughter, Joan McAfee, died in 1965.
Survivors include a grandson, Scott McAfee of Sebastian, Fla.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
