Karvel Bowles, singer and firefighter/EMT

Karvel Lynn Bowles had health problems, but he didn't let his difficulties get in the way of helping others.

"He had diabetes so bad that he had to take injections, but that wasn't a big concern for him, " said his brother, Clarence Bowles of Erlanger. "He was the most helpful person I've ever known."

Mr. Bowles, 41, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He was a maintenance supervisor with Paul Hemmer Co., a firefighter with the Woodlawn Fire Department, and an emergency medical technician.

In his spare time, Mr. Bowles enjoyed entertaining people. He was a disc jockey at weddings, announced fire department-sponsored peewee football games and bingo games, appeared in variety shows for the Newport PTA, and put on skits for friends and relatives.

He was a good singer and appeared on the "Puttin' on the Hits" television show.

"He was very light-hearted, " said Clarence Bowles. "He would do anything to get a laugh. You couldn't be depressed around him. He was a great joy in people's lives."

Mr. Bowles also enjoyed gardening and yard work.

"He was very outdoorsy and as athletic as diabetes would allow him to be, " said his brother.

Other survivors include his wife, Lori Ann Bowles; his mother, Frances Bowles of West Harrison, Ind.; brothers, Dennis Bowles and Bob Bowles, both of Florence; sisters, Frances Cooper of Southgate, Julie Sandlin of Dry Ridge, and Rebecca Alford, Phyllis Hawkins and Betty Bowles, all of Newport.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Community Pentecostal Church, Independence.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, with a fire department service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Angie Burns, 41, of Independence, died at 9:17 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a specialty manager with Petsmart.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Lee Burns; sons, Mike Stewart of Cold Spring, Eric Stewart of Newport and Brandon Burns of Independence; daughters, Shannon Stewart of Dayton and Brittany Burns of Independence; a brother, Kipton Hudson of Independence; a sister, Kim King of Texas; and a grandson.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Covington.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Carol Jean Crail, 55, of Alexandria, died at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a housekeeper with Castilini Co., Wilder.

Survivors include her husband, Ron-ald B. Crail; sons, Anthony Daniel Crail and Ronald Travis Crail, both of Alexandria; a daughter, Samantha Nicole Crail of Alexandria; her parents, Walter and Marcella Bolton of Alexandria; brothers, David Bolton and Jerry Bolton, both of Alexandria; and sisters, Pay Walley of Amelia, Ohio, Gail Trapp of Alexandria and Linda Cooper of Silver Grove.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Ruth Lee Stephens Helmer, 78, of Fort Wright, died at 8:59 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was co-founder of Helmer Plumbing Co. Her husband, Paul Joseph Helmer, died in 1997.

Survivors include sons, Steve Helmer and John Helmer, both of Union; daughters, Terri Woodside of Fort Mitchell, Jo Ann Kramer of Villa Hills and Jeanette Schwartz of San Francisco; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 6 p.m. Friday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Vicki Ann Smith Holsonback, 50, of Augusta, Ga., died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Survivors include daughters, Michelle H. Bodkins of Apple Creek, Ohio, and Jessica Elizabeth Holsonback of Erlanger; and sisters, Cathy S. Martin of Piedmont, S.C., and Julie S. Todd of Jackson, S.C.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Cemetery, Augusta, Ga. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Poteet Funeral Home, Augusta, Ga.

Morris Wayne Humphrey, 86, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown.

He was an employee of Crosley Corp. in Cincinnati, the Hotel Donald, Carlsbad Hotel, Rennaker's Dodge-Plymouth Garage, Snow's Garage, Pennick's Farm Supply and Curry's Auto Parts, all in Grant County.

He also was a member of the Grant County Historical Society, Dry Ridge Masonic Lodge No. 849, and ry Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a niece and two nephews.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Dry Ridge Christian Church. Visitation begins there at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Raymond L. Lilly, 76, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired baggage handler with Delta Airlines. He was a deacon of Dry Ridge Christian Church, sentinel of the Williamstown Order of the Eastern Star No. 301, and member of Owen Lodge No. 128 F&AM; and Delta Pioneers. His first wife, Wanda Furnish Lilly, died in 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Vice Rash Lilly; daughters, Sherry Lilly-Black of Peachtree City, Ga., and Linda Collins of Florence; stepdaughters, Judy Ellegood of Newport News, Va., Lorna Stewart and Dena Johnson, both of Dry Ridge; a stepson, Rob Rash of Dry Ridge; a grandson, nine step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Geraldine R. Lunsford, 83, of Lake Placid, Fla., died at 11:12 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James Church, Minerva, and St. Patrick Church, Maysville.

She also was a former employee of Heck's and Maysville OK Stockyards. Her husband, Lawrence Lunsford, died in 1986. A son, Stephen Lawrence Lunsford, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, John Lunsford of Washington and James Lunsford of Louisville; daughters, Stephanie Varvell of Millersburg, Sharon Davis of Cov-ington, Christie Morgan of Lake Placid and Janell Ogden of Crescent Springs; sisters, Cecilia Murray of Red Bluff, Calif., and Rosalie Bissett of Lake Placid; brothers, Justin Germann of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Donald Germann of Jefferson, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Church, Mays-ville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Mays-ville. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville.

Theodore J. Montmeny, 84, of Crescent Springs, died at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired insurance salesman, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jan Montmeny; sons, Ted Montmeny of Crescent Springs and Christopher Montmeny of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; daughters, Nicole James of Fort Mitchell, Monique Dwyer of Atlanta and Nina Cullen of San Francisco; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Survivors include sons, Charles E. Parker of Owenton and Jackie Glenn Parker of Glencoe; brothers, Albert Thomas Parker and Marvin Lee Parker, both of Frankfort; a sister, Mary Etta Bibb of Louisville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald & New Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery.

Paula Cropenbaker Reed, 50, of California, died Saturday at her home.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Reed; sons, Justin Reed and Jonathon Reed, both of California; her parents, Edwin and Betty Cropenbaker of California; a brother, Dusty Cropenbaker of California; and a sister, Pam Strassinger of California.

Services were this morning at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery, Mentor.

Anna Christine Hopperton Rich, 79, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth C. Rich of Walton; sons, Ernest W. Rich of Corbin, Kenny L. Rich of Florence, Gary L. Rich and Rick D. Rich, both of Walton; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Lucille Katherine Merit Rothe, 88, of Highland Heights, died Saturday at Highland Heights Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was a cigar maker with Ibold Cigar Co. Her husband, Norbert Rothe, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Visse of Highland Heights; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Highland Heights Care and Rehabilitation Center Chapel. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Edith Mae Strasinger, 88, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Western Hill campus, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. A son, James Strasinger, died in 2002.

Survivors include her husband, David Strasinger; daughters, Claudia Stiles of Milford, Ohio, and Shirley Dietz of Cincinnati; a sister, Helen Orchelle of Dry Ridge; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Ralph Lee Whisner, 67, of Maysville, died at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Beckett of Maysville; sons, Ralph Lee Whisner Jr. of Maysville and Travis Allen Whisner of Tollesboro; a brother, Francis Whisner of Batavia, Ohio; sisters, Edith Palmer of Batavia, Alice Day and Cindy Day, both of Peebles, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
