Gladys Oberjohann's generosity was limitless
You wouldn't have known that Gladys Oberjohann had no children of her own to look around her home.
First in Latonia and later at a Boone County farm, Mrs. Oberjohann and her husband, Charles, helped raise her nephew Charlie Winston, of Burlington, and his brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Oberjohann, 96, died Thursday at Woodcrest Manor in Elsmere.
"She helped raise me and my five sisters and a brother. She made clothes for us. She was a beautiful seamstress. She made wedding dresses for my sisters when they got married, " Mr. Winston said.
Grass didn't grow under her feet, either. The Boone County home she and her husband bought was just a shell. Mrs. Oberjohann got busy helping install drywall and hardwood floors.
She churned her own butter. She made clothes for her extended family. And she kept a spotless house
On top of taking care of a husband and a home full of children, she was a devoted member of Burlington Methodist, a member of Eastern Star women's club in Florence and Hebron Homemakers, and for many years the proprietor of the largest Avon cosmetics route in Boone County.
"She was involved in so many things, and how she found time to take care of her husband and housework and everything I don't have any idea, " Mr. Winston said.
Mr. Winston said there were no limits to Mrs. Oberjohann's generosity to her friends, family and neighbors. Through her many volunteer activities, her reputation preceded her most places she'd go.
"We couldn't go any place in Kentucky to get something to eat where she wouldn't see somebody who knew her, " Mr. Winston said. "She was just quite a woman. She was loved by everybody she came in contact with. They all called her Aunt Gladys. I never heard her complain, even through her sickness unto death."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Winston.
