Joan Reutter loved teaching and travel

Joan Reutter loved to teach children and enjoyed being active in her community.

"She really enjoyed teaching, " said her daughter, Edith Reutter, 37, of Independence. "She loved working with the kids."

Mrs. Reutter, 69, of Independence, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

She taught at St. Cecilia School in Independence before retiring in the 1980s. She worked with children who needed extra help in subjects such as math, spelling, reading and geography, and also was a substitute teacher. She previously taught in Winchester.

After her retirement, Mrs. Reutter remained active with the school and St. Cecilia Parish. She baked cakes for parish and school festivals, and volunteered her time and services for their events.

She also loved animals and enjoyed traveling.

"She loved animals, especially dogs, " her daughter said. "We always had dogs in our family: cocker spaniels and English springer spaniels."

During a trip to the Cincinnati Zoo this winter, Mrs. Reutter couldn't tear herself away from watching the manatees, her daughter said.

"She really liked seeing the manatees swim. We must have sat there watching them for hours, " her daughter said.

Mrs. Reutter and her husband of 41 years, Harold, lived in Europe briefly. She also enjoyed traveling to visit relatives in Chicago and Michigan, and visiting national parks in the western part of America. Three years ago, she took her first cruise to the Caribbean with her husband and daughter.

"She loved traveling, " said her daughter.

Edith Reutter said her parents got up and danced during a recent trip to Newport's Hofbruhaus to celebrate her father's birthday.

"We requested a couple of old German waltzes, and it was so nice to see them dancing together, " she said.

"She was also very patriotic, " said her daughter. "The whole war generation -- Korean War, World War II -- was patriotic."
