Harry 'Hank' Rawlings, was Newport High grad

Even into his 70s, Harry "Hank" Rawlings kept a hard hat in his car.

Mr. Rawlings, former associate director of the University of Cincinnati's physical plant division, died at his Delhi Township home Saturday. He was 75.

Mr. Rawlings worked for 23 years at UC after serving as an engineer for the City of Cincinnati. He oversaw physical operations, such as painting and plumbing, on campus.

"He was very popular there, " said his daughter, Christine Crapsey. "He got a standing ovation from every union when he retired."

After his retirement, Mr. Rawlings continued to do independent consulting work for architecture firms.

"He just wanted to keep his hand in it, " Crapsey said. "He loved going to visit job sites."

Mr. Rawlings, son of former Newport city manager John Rawlings, graduated from Newport High School at 17 and entered the Army. He served for a year and a half, mostly in U.S.-occupied Japan after World War II.

After his military service, Mr. Rawlings followed his father in earning a degree in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky through the G.I. Bill.

Mr. Rawlings also was an avid reader in many subjects.

"Literature, history, architecture, landscaping -- he would read up on it and be an expert, " Crapsey said. "He could recite whole passages from what he had read."

His grandson, Robert, developed the motto: "If you're stumped on any subject, just call Grandpa."
