Walter E. Burgoyne, had many interests
Walter E. "Pete" Burgoyne always dreamed about flying airplanes.
It was something he had pondered when he joined the Army in 1939 and served in its Air Corps in World War II, but it wasn't until he turned 78 that he decided to chase his dream.
Mr. Burgoyne took lessons at Lunken Airport and then, along with two others, flew two Cessna planes to California and back.
"At the time, I said 'who is jealous of their 78-year-old father except me, '" his son, Tim Burgoyne Sr., of Loveland, said.
Walter Burgoyne, 86, of Florence, died at 3:05 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Mr. Burgoyne was not afraid to try anything that caught his interest. His hobbies -- crocheting, playing the organ and painting -- are evidence to that.
When Mr. Burgoyne took his wife, Virginia C. "Ginny" Burgoyne, who died in 1989, to a crochet class, the instructor suggested he sign up, too. So he did.
And even when his wife dropped out of the class after two sessions, Mr. Burgoyne continued learning to crochet, his son said. He started making blankets that he gave to his daughter to auction off for a charity in which she was involved.
"He was a guy who did a lot of interesting things in his life, " Burgoyne said.
Mr. Burgoyne also was a guy who was interested in meeting new people. His son said everywhere his father went he would spark up conversations with fresh faces. Once, while visiting his daughter in Indiana, Mr. Burgoyne was in a hardware store with his son-in-law. As his son-in-law shopped, Mr. Burgoyne chatted with the clerk.
To this day, Burgoyne said, the clerk still asks his brother-in-law how "Pete" is doing.
Mr. Burgoyne was a retired trainmaster with the former L&N; Railroad. After retirement he started a new career as a real estate agent. And after that, his son said, he delivered cars for the Budget rental car company.
