Joseph Dames, veteran and consulting engineer
Joseph B. Dames fought in World War II, won a Purple Heart, played in a swing music band, met the woman who would become his wife and married
her -- all in the first 22 years of his life.
Mr. Dames, 78, who died Sunday at his Fort Mitchell home, joined the Army after graduating from Elder High School in Cincinnati and fought in the European Theater until he was wounded on his 19th birthday. German troops dropped percussion grenades on him as he crouched against the wall of a building, holding the only automatic weapon in his unit.
The Army awarded him a Purple Heart for his efforts and sent him home.
When he recovered from his wounds, Mr. Dames played clarinet and saxophone in a Cincinnati-based big band. It was while doing that that he met Helen Reinke, who played piano in another swing band. Their bands frequently played at local venues on the same nights, but the two didn't meet until they were set up on a blind date, she said.
They married, a union that lasted 56 years.
In the next 34 years of his life, Mr. Dames was as dedicated to his family and community as he had been to his country.
"He encouraged all us children to be the best we could be, and once we achieved that, to try hard to be a little better, " said his son, Rick Dames of High Point, N.C.
Mr. Dames served as president of the Erlanger Civic Association and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He worked as a consulting engineer for Indianapolis-based ITW/GEMA until his retirement five years ago.
Another son, Rob Dames, a commercial pilot from Crescent Springs, taught his father how to fly, something Mr. Dames did recreationally for 10 years.
"He was a very humble man, " Rick Dames said. "We had to talk him into getting the Purple Heart license plate."
Mr. Dames was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, and St. Xavier Church, Cincinnati, and a Kentucky Colonel.
In addition to his wife and two sons, he is survived by daughters Judy Kreinest of Villa Hills, Janeen Donoghue and Joyce Kreinest, both of Taylor Mill, and Joelle Michels of Fort Wright; another son, Mike Dames of Erlanger; a sister Patricia Felix of Cincinnati ; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
