Roscoe Dyer Jr., 64, Army veteran
Roscoe Dyer Jr., 64, of Vanceburg, Ky., died Tuesday March 11, 1997, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Born Dec. 19, 1932, in Rock Run, Ky., a son of the lated Roscoe Dyer and Minnie Armstrong Dyer, he was a Korean War Army veteran and a construckton worker and heavy equiptment operatory. He attended the Pentecostal Chruch of Rock Run, Ky.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Nolen Dyer; three sons, Mickle W. Dyer of Reynoldsburg and Roger D. Dyer and Elmer Junior Dyer both of Vanceburg; a daughter, Carolyn Dyer Plank of Vanceburg; five brothers, Orville Dyer and Clifford Dyer, both of Vanceburg, Russell Dyer of Morehead, Ky., m and Woody Dyer and Jimmy Dyer both of Paisley, Fla.; two sisters, Bonnie Gilaspy of Lake Santee, Ind., and Barbara Butler of Knightstown, Ind.; 11 grandchilren; and four great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Kirby and Randall Dyer; a daughter-in-law and a grandson.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg, Ky., with the Rev. Harold Eugene Evans officiationg, a nd interment in Hannable cemetery at Rock Run.

Portsmouth Times, Monday, Jan. 8, 1945
Thomas Dyer
Thomas Dyer, 73, retired farmer and native of Lewis co., Ky., passed away Sunday at 3:25 a.m. at the home of a son, Allie Dyer, Columbus. He had been ill the last year of a heart ailment. Mr. Dyer had made his home with a daughter Mrs. Virgie Shepherd of Friendship, prior to his illness.
He was born Oct. 5, 1871, a son of Francis and Mary Dyer, who preceded him in death. He came to Ohio 25 years ago and was a member of the Baptist church on Stony Run. He was married 50 years ago to Elizabeth Ash, who died Feb. 7, 1940.
Besides his son and daughter, he leaves these other children: Lewis Dyer, Mrs. Isabel Moore, John Dyer, Lee Dyer, all of Columbus, Austin Dyer of Friendship and Mrs. Ethel Hackworth of Rainelle, Va. Also surviving are two brothers, John Dyer and William Dyer of Vanceburg. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
The body will be brought Tuesday morning to the home of Mrs. Shepherd on Odle Creek, near Friendship. Funeral services will be conducted at 2: p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Methodist church.

Cyrus
Clyde Eldra Cyrus, 67, of 2146 Royce St., died Friday in Mercy Hospital.
A native of New Boston, he was a 33 year employee of Williams Mfg. Co., working as an outside cutter.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Roberts Cyrus; six sons, Gary of Columbus, Francis of Summitt St., Jim of Jackson Ave., Sam of Miami, Fla., Larry, at home, and Glendon of Nebraska; a daughter, Mrs. Carol Smith of Hawaii; his mother Emma Logan Cyrus of Royce St.; a brother, Francis of McDermott; a sister, Mrs. Agnes Hayslip of Brunner Rd. and 11 grandchildren.
Services are planned Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pennington Funeral Home in New Boston, with burial in Flora Hills Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funnel home today from 4 to 9 p.m.

Portsmouth Times, Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1953
Elias Cyrus
Elias Cyrus, 77, died Monday afternoon at his home on Tatman-Coe road near McDermott where he had lived the last seven years.
A retired Vulcan Last Corp. employee Mr. Cyrus was born Nov. 4, 1875 at Putnam County, W.Va., a son of William and Elizabeth Henderson Cyrus.
He was married at Greenup, Sept. 21, 1902 to Emma Logan, who survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Kennard of McDermott, Clyde of 2143 Jackson St., Willard and Francis of Lucasville Rt. 1, a daughter Mrs. Agnes Hayslip, 1830 Jackson St., a sister, Mrs. Betty Martin of Garrison; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The parents, two sisters, three brothers and two daughters preceded in death.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Duck Run church. Rev. George Lute officiating. Burial will be in Rushtown cemetery under direction of McKinley Funeral Home. The body is at the home of a son, Francis Cyrus of Lucasville Rt. 1.

Sam Cyrus, 52
Sam K. Cyrus, 52, of Miami, Fla., former Portsmouth resident, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001.
He was a Vietnam War Air Force veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Cyrus. Surviving are children, Tracey and Kelly; brothers, Gary, Pete, Jim, Larry and Glendon Cyrus and sister, Carol Smith.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Van Orsdel-Kendall Drive Chapel, 11220 North Kendall Drive, Miami, interment in Woodlawn Park South. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday and until the service Monday at the funeral home.

R. W. PADGETT
Rusau Woodson Padgett was born March 20, 1875, at the old homestead north of Peabody, Kansas. He departed this life Sept. 24, 1937 at the Wesley Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. At the age of 62 years, 6 months and 4 days.
He was the youngest son of John Cavin (1842-1940) and Margaret Ann Norris Padgett (1848-1880). His early life was spent with his parents at their farm home.
On Aug. 23, 1899, he was united in marriage to Ella Ennis (1874-1964). This happy couple spent all their married life in Marion County (Kansas). Truly it can be said of Mr. Padgett; he was a faithful, true and loving husband and father.
Rusau decided early in life to become a Christian and throughout the years of his life kept this faith.
During all his illness, he has been patient, willing to the last to accept all aids of medical science.
Mr. Padgett leaves behind for a while, the wife, his daughter [Floy 1891-after 1964] and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Cavanah of Wichita, Kansas; his aged father, John Cavin Padgett of Florence. His mother died when he was a youth. His stepmother [the former Phebe Amelia Lofgren, 1870-1958] is living and mourns his departure today; for he was to her a son and she to him a mother. He also leaves three brothers; William Sherman Padgett [1866-1944] of Marion, Kansas, John Manson Padgett [1869-1953] of Greenleaf, Kansas; half brother, Curtis Cavin Padgett [1897-1960] of Newton, Kansas. One brother, George Washington Padgett [1873-1927] and two sisters, Mrs. Porter [Mary Padgett 1867-1927] Stovall and Mrs. John [Lucy Jane Padgett 1877-1932] Snelling as well as twin siblings [1871-1871, 1871-1872]; also half brother, Thompson Padgett [1884-1895 by John Cavin Padgett's second wife, Amanda Thompson Padgett, 1861-1884] preceded him in death. Four living half sisters: Mrs. Grace [Padgett 1889-1974] Selvy, Burns, Kansas; Mrs. Azalea [Padgett 1901-1988] Burkett, Hays, Kansas; Miss Harriette [1895-1975] and Miss Edna [1906-1999] Padgett of Florence, Kansas. Besides the loved ones he leaves a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Bert Sutton of the First Christian Church of Florence, Kansas in the Christian Church at Peabody, at 2:30 PM, Sunday, September 26, 1937, burial to follow in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, KS.

William Marshall Padgett, son of George Washington and Harriett (Calvert) Padgett was born at Farmers, KY on April 12, 1850, and departed this life at the family home in Peabody, KS on March 9, 1941, at the ripe old age of 90 yrs, 10 mos, and 27 days.
At the age of 21 he came to Marshall Co., KS, where on Nov. 12, 1878, he was married to Ella (Ida Louella) Brown [ Nov 14, 1861] who departed this life on Nov 20, 1887. To this union four children were born, two [Russel Padgett, 1880-1881 & Charles Keater Padgett, 1886-1886] of whom died in infancy. The two surviving are Rolla Emerson Padgett [Aug 13, 1879 - Sept 23, 1960) and Eugene Wilson Padgett (Aug 4, 1882 - Dec 11, 1940].
On Nov 9, 1895, he was again married to Cora M. Wagner [Aug. 28, 1876 - Jan 14, 1956] in Marysville, Marshall Co., KS. To this union three children were born, namely Mazie Lee [Padgett] Rice [Sept 30, 1896 - Jan 14, 1989] [Mrs. Charles J. Rice], Lucy May (Padgett) Nellans [July 20, 1901 - Julu 20, 2000] [Mrs. Andrew Jackson Nellans], and Arthur Wilson Padgett [ July 25, 1898] who died on Nov. 6, 1925.
In 1874 he located on a farm east of Peabody, Marion Co., KS which was his home until he retired and moved to Peabody, Marion Co., KS in January, 1926.
He was a member of the Christian Church of (Peabody) for many years. Mr. Padgett is survived by his wife Cora, two sons, Rollie of Leoti, KS and Eugene of Hutchinson, KS; two daughters, Mazie Rice of Wichita, KS and Lucy M. Nellans of Peabody, KS. Also 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also by one sister, Mrs. Charles Recrtor of New Castle, IN.
Mr. Padgett was a fine old fashioned courteous Christian gentleman and had many friends. He was the last of seven brothers and sisters who came to Kansas from Kentucky in 1870 all of whom attained the age of 90 years or more except one sister, Mrs. Harriet Padgett Stovall who died at the age of 69.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon [March 11, 1941] at the Christian Church ... after which interment was made in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, KS.

Parsons
Bethuel Ace Parsons, 70, of Dutch Ridge Rd. Sciotoville, Rt. 4, died Wednesday at home.
A Greenup, Ky., native and a World War II veteran, he was a retired sheetmetal employee of Union Construction Co.
Surviving is a brother, Charles Parsons of Clearwater, Fla.
Services are planned at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pennington-Bishop Funeral Home in New Boston, with Rev. James L. Smith officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Portsmouth Times, Monday, June 23, 1958
B. D. Parsons
Betheuel Delbert Parsons, 69, of Sciotoville Rt. 4, died at his home Sunday at 8:45 a.m. He had been ill two weeks of a heart condition.
He was born June 16, 1889 in Greenup County, Ky., the son of John D. and Liza Fisher Parsons. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Griffith Parsons, whom he married Jan. 12, 1912.
Also surviving are three sons, Bethuel of Tampa, Fla., Malcon and Charles of Columbus; a brother Harmon of Wisconsin; three sisters, Mrs. Forrest Wooten of Sciotoville, Rt. 2, Mrs. John Smith of West Portsmouth; Mrs. Elsa Cooper of Portsmouth and four grandchildren.
A retired farmer, Mrs. Parsons was a member of the Baptist faith and of the Odd Fellows lodge.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Morton Funeral Home, New Boston. Rev. James Smith will officiate with burial to follow in Memorial Burial park.
Friends may call at the funeral home.

Portsmouth Times, Saturday, Dec. 5, 1925
H. B. Parsons
Death at 3 a.m. Friday, claimed H. B. Parsons, a well know merchant of Brushart, Greenup county Ky.
Mr. Parsons had been in the best of health and had arisen to make the morning fire when stricken with paralysis. He remained in a coma until the end.
Mr. Parsons was 70 years of age. He was born in Virginia and came to Brushart, Ky. when yet a young man and engaged in the mercantile business. He was so engaged when called by death. He had one of the most complete general stores in Kentucky.
Mr. Parsons was also a postmaster at Brushart. He was a devout Christian and a splendid citizen and his death will be felt keenly not only at the home and community, but the county in general as he was a very substantial contributor to the new road fund in those parts.
To morn his passing he leaves his devoted wife, Mrs. Dora Middleton Parsons, two sons, Woodrow and Wayne at home, J. D. Parsons of Glover St. and Mrs. Ida Keeney by a former marriage.
Four sisters also survive; Mrs. Chas. Lykens of Ironton, O, Mrs. Gooden Lykens of Russell, Ky., Mrs. F. M. Green of Brushart, and Mrs. Parlee Bowman of South Point, O. H. C. Bowman of this city is a nephew. The following are grandchildren living here: H. B. Parsons of Jackson Ave., H. B. Parsons Jr. of New Boston, Orville Keeney of Front St., Eslie Logan of Coles Park, H. O. Logan, William Miller of Gallia Ave., Mrs. J. S. Smith of Eighth St., Mrs. Elza Cooper, Glover St., Mrs. H. F. Wooten, Hannah Addition; Roberta Keeney of Front St. He also leaves a large number of other grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
The funeral services which were largely attended were held at the first Christian Church at Brushart.
The floral tributes were many and beautiful showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
Interment was in the Parsons cemetery.
