Lillian Cleaver, helped found rape crisis center
Lillian Kay Cox Cleaver lived a life fit for a novel.
She said that growing up with her four sisters approximated Rebecca Wells' book, "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood."
That sisterhood gave her a tireless passion to fight for women's rights. Her efforts were best known in the Rape Crisis Center of Northern Kentucky, which she helped to found in Covington in 1976.
Ms. Cleaver, 53, of Crestview Hills died Tuesday at her home.
Now known as the Women's Crisis Center, the facility is staffed by 70 employees and assisted by over 100 volunteers annually. Since its 1976 debut, the center has grown to include the eight counties in the Northern Kentucky Area Development District, and the five counties in the Buffalo Trace Area Development District, two residential shelters and five walk-in offices.
"She just wanted to make sure people were treated well, " said her niece, Robin Caywood, of Palm Springs, Calif. "She was so full of life and had a spark in her eye."
Ms. Cleaver was a human resources consultant and a lover of the outdoors. She taught workshops at the Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford, Ohio, Caywood said.
"Always up for adventure, " she loved hiking in the woods. And she even brought the outdoors to her home.
She was an avid bird lover. She always had them, her niece said. She was especially fond of her parakeet Jazz, named for one of her favorite forms of music.
Ms. Cleaver would play drums on anything she could find with Caywood's son, Brahm, who she nicknamed "Ya-Ya."
"She was a jokester, " Caywood said. "She loved teasing people in a sweet way."
Her friends loved her "wonderful laugh."
Her love of people was genuine. She would ask a million questions about a person and want to know all the specifics, her niece said.
