'Big Rod' Massey, loved his daughter
In the words of his mother, Wallace Rodney "Big Rod" Massey Jr. saw a lot of hard roads in his life.
"I just wish that people out there could learn that when they chose those kinds of roads, they're either going to end up overdosed, or in jail, or dead. There's just no good outcomes, " said his mother, Faye Collins Massey of Covington.
Mr. Massey, 41, died from a gunshot wound to the head shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati.
He was the city's 36th homicide victim of the year.
"He went over in the wrong part of town at the wrong time of night, no doubt to purchase drugs, " his mother said.
Mr. Massey, who grew up in Covington, went to prison at a very young age, his mother said, going in and out of correctional institutions for 12 years.
But then he seemed to get his life together. He went to work for a trucking company and eventually had his own big rig. He loved the job, loved taking goods all over the country and visiting different places, his mother said.
But things went downhill again after he separated from his wife, his mother said. It was hard for him to deal with not seeing his daughter full-time.
He started using heroin, she said, and then whatever was available. He lost his driver's license for driving under the influence.
In recent months, he had been trying again to put his life together once again. He went to vocational rehabilitation, and his employer was helping him pay some of his fines so he could get his license back.
Mr. Massey loved to joke, and he always made time to talk with children, his mother. He would sit for hours and play with his daughter. He would have her sit on the steps and have a tea party with her, his mother said.
"He loved his family very much, and we loved him, " she said. "He particularly loved his little girl, Raven, more than life itself."
