Violet Wetherell, had second career as nurse
Violet V. Paul Wetherell spent much of her life helping her husband run two small businesses -- Northern Kentucky Speedway, a dirt track for stock cars in Union, and a Mr. Softee franchise that sold ice cream from more than 100 trucks across Greater Cincinnati.
When they gave up both in the early 1980s, she decided to carve out a new career for herself as a nurse. To do that, she had to go back to school -- first to get her GED, then to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing from Northern Kentucky University.
"We went to college at the same time, " said a son, Chris Wetherell of Taylor Mill. "Some things I helped her with, and some things she helped me with."
Mrs. Wetherell, who died Thursday at the age of 68 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, worked for 20 years as a registered nurse at Children's Psychiatric Hospital of Northern Kentucky, now North Key, in Fort Wright. Before she retired in 1997, she rose to assistant director of nursing there.
She was well respected enough in her profession that she was elected to the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
Nursing was a natural for his mother, even if she came to it in middle age, Chris Wetherell said.
"She was always trying to help everybody she could, " he said.
