Eileen McLeod St. John, taught kids with learning difficulties
Eileen McLeod St. John would see an old raggedy doll at a yard sale and know she could turn it into something elegant for someone in need.
She devoted her life to teaching children with learning difficulties and making crafts for everyone.
Ms. St. John, 61, of Florence, died Thursday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere, of complications from cancer.
She worked for Troy City Schools in Troy, Ohio, after her graduation from Campbellsville (Ky.) University. She taught language arts to children with disabilities.
"It was a calling, " said her college roommate, Peggy Kinman of Florence. "She felt it was a missionary enterprise because her goal was to serve God."
Ms. St. John was a strict disciplinarian with her students, but she had a "great heart" for them, Kinman said.
She would invite the children over to her house, where she would cook for them, fix the girls' hair, and teach the girls about becoming young ladies.
She was a counselor for the Children's International Summer Village, giving 12-year-olds from around the world a workshop in Troy to learn about peacekeeping. But an ulcer disease forced her to retire from teaching at the age of 31. It was "heartbreaking, " Kinman said.
Ms. St. John found new ways to keep her hands busy. Her crafts and quilts earned her top prizes at Kenton and Grant County fairs. She became president of Kenton County Extension Homemakers because of her talent. She designed the bicentennial quilt for the organization which is still on display. She made quilts for just about everyone she knew -- and even some strangers.
She was also a former writer in the late 1980s for the News Enterprise in Ludlow, Ky. She loved reading and writing, so she felt the need to write for the paper because "it was the community thing to do, " Kinman said.
She was past president of the St. Charles Care Center Auxillary. She loved caring for the elderly, Kinman said. "She gave a great deal of her finances to children and the needy."
She loved her pets: one dog and one cat. She also worked at an animal hospital in Phoenix.
