Raymond Crawford, tireless Reds usher

Cincinnati Reds fans lost a true baseball follower and fans this week may be at a loss to find their seats at the ballpark.

Longtime Reds and Bengals usher Raymond Allen Crawford Sr., 92, of Highland Heights died at 7:55 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was an usher for the Reds and Bengals for 22 years, working the 50-yard line seats at Paul Brown Stadium.

Crawford ushered the Reds game before Easter, then had some tough innings. He had a heart attack on Easter Sunday, his family said, and underwent open-heart surgery with five bypasses on April 15. Then on April 25, his wife Evelyn Crawford, passed away of a stroke.

An extraordinarily athletic man, Mr. Crawford stayed super-fit and was active until the last days of his life.

"Last year on his 91st birthday, Fox News featured him running up and down the steps, seating people, " his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Crawford, of Fort Thomas said.

"He worked hard at playing. He was very active, " she said, noting that he was "like a 60 year old" physically.

He still enjoyed inner-tubing and jet skiing at the family's house in Lake Cumberland, Mrs. Crawford said. He also attended water aerobics at the Campbell County YMCA in Fort Thomas three times a week.

"Every year he won all the Senior Olympics at the Y because, as he said, 'There's no one to compete against in my age group, '" she said.

During his illness, some of the Reds fans who sat regularly in his section visited him in the hospital and at home, Mrs. Crawford said.

He was a retired maintenance supervisor with Professional Maintenance Co., Cincinnati, and owner of Crawford's Grocery Store in Newport.
